Retired Trinity Area School District teacher

Russell D. Walker, 65, of Whitehall, died Thursday, January 9, 2014.

He was the beloved husband of Karen Monro Walker; father of Emily and Theresa Walker; son of the late Norbert and Sarah Ann Walker and brother of Carl (Marlynne) Walker and the late Ronald (survived by Patricia) Walker, Kenneth Walker, R. Raymond (survived by Karen) Walker and Susan Walker.

Mr. Walker was a retired teacher for Trinity Area School District, where he taught reading and English for 35-and-a-half years. He was also an avid gardener who was interested in environmentally friendly gardening techniques.

He was a passionate supporter of the Whitehall Public Library. As a teenager, he was the second page ever hired by the library. He had a nine-year tenure on the Whitehall Public Library’s Board of Trustees, serving as board president, vice president, secretary and Allegheny County Library Association representative. He recently took an active role in the Friends of Whitehall Library.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in John F. Slater Funeral Home Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, PA 15227, where a funeral prayer will be said at 9:15 a.m. Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, January 13, in St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church, Whitehall.
