Mortgage loan officer was licensed pilot

Matthew N. Bereznay, 61, of New Eagle, died Thursday, January 9, 2014, in McMurray Hills Manor.

He was born December 16, 1952, in Monongahela, a son of the late Charles Bereznay and Ruth Walters Bereznay, who survives and resides in Belle Vernon.

Mr. Bereznay was employed for more than 25 years as a mortage loan officer for several different companies, retiring from West Penn Financial in Pittsburgh.

A licensed pilot at the age of 19, he had a passion for flying. He also was an avid golfer, loved sports, taking walks in Mingo Creek County Park and performing his job.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Read Bereznay, with whom he celebrated 19 years of marriage October 1, 2013; a son, Michael and wife Amy Bereznay of Sewickley; two grandsons, Carson and Logan Bereznay; a brother, John and wife Vanessa Bereznay of Belle Vernon; and a sister, Gail Bell of Monongahela.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 14, with the Rev. William Lusk, officiating. Interment will follow in Mon-Valley Memorial Park, Donora.

Jennie M. Buttermore, 64, of Greensboro, died Thursday, January 9, 2014, in Morgantown, W.Va.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m., the time of service, Sunday, January 12, in Lesako Funeral Home Inc., Carmichaels.

Laberta DiFlauro D’Amico, 85, of Canonsburg, died unexpectedly Thursday, January 9, 2014, in Canonsburg Hospital.

She was born November 17, 1928, in Johnstown, a daughter of the late John and Amelia Tamburro DiFlauro.

Mrs. D’Amico was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg for many years.

She loved to bake and share recipes and goodies with her family and friends. She loved her family and considered her friends a part of her extended family.

On November 16, 1957, in Immaculate Conception Church, Pittsburgh, she married Domenic D’Amico, who survives, with whom she recently celebrated 56 years of marriage.

Surviving are two daughters, Amy and Christine D’Amico, and a son, Alfonzo (Cindy) D’Amico, all of Canonsburg; a brother, Raymond DiFlauro of California; a nephew, John DiFlauro and his family of California; an aunt and uncle, Rose and Nick Tamburro and their family of Verona; and many loved cousins and friends.

Deceased are a brother, Abraham DiFlauro, and a niece, Michelle DiFlauro.

Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Mario L. DeAngelo Funeral Home, 194 East College Street, Canonsburg, where departing prayers will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 13, followed at 11 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Canonsburg. Entombment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Township. The Christian Mothers of St. Patrick Parish will pray the rosary at 3 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

St. Joseph the Worker Church member

Mary C. Denny, 90, of Weirton, W.Va., passed away Friday, January 10, 2014, in Brightwood Center, Follansbee, W.Va.

She was born March 12, 1920, in Burgettstown, a daughter of the late John and Anna Gregor Pescho.

Deceased are her husband, William S. Denny, who died in 1988; sisters Helen Tope, Irene Pradetto, Annie Boulson and Pauline Porchiran Cullari; and brothers Andy, John, Mike, George and Paul Pescho.

She was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church and Christian Mothers.

Surviving are a sister, Dorothy Liptak of Broadview Heights, Ohio, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 380 Penco Road, Weirton. 54-year member of American Legion Post 175

Richard B. Dimmack, 92, of Newark, Del., went home to be with his Lord Monday, January 6, 2014.

He was born May 22, 1921, to Arthur and Isa Dimmack in Washington, where he lived before moving to Delaware in 2000, spending the last 13 years with his daughter.

Mr. Dimmack was a 50-year member of Masons Lodge 164, Washington, a 54-year member of American Legion Post 175, Washington, and a member of P.T. Boats Inc., Boat 252 Unit RON 20.

On August 17, 1946, he married Betty Jane Lowry.

Surviving are his sons, Richard L. Dimmack and A. David Dimmack; daughter Susan Corbett; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three nephews.

Deceased are his loving wife of 32 years, Betty Jane; grandson Richard J. Dimmack; his parents; brother Frank Dimmack; and sister Amy Dimmack Osborne.

Services were held Thursday, January 9, in St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, 10 Old Newark Road, Newark, DE 19713. Burial will be in Washington at a later date.

Beloved husband, loving father

Thomas James “Tom” Grimpe, 72, of North Strabane Township, peacefully passed away Friday, January 10, 2014, in his home.

He was the beloved husband of Linda L. Skapik Grimpe for 45 years; loving father of T.J. (Mishele) Grimpe and Beth (Tony) Chapman; and grandfather of Abby Grimpe and Mandy and Justin Chapman.

Elementary school teacher raised in Claysville

Mary Lee Hodinko, 78, of Washington, raised in Claysville, died Thursday, January 9, 2014, in Humbert Lane Care Centre, South Strabane Township.

She was born January 27, 1935, in Claysville, a daughter of Alvin H. Carl and Mary Sheller Carl, who are deceased.

Mrs. Hodinko was a graduate of Claysville High School and California State Teachers College. She was employed as an elementary school teacher in Alexandria, Va., for 10 years, Ravenswood, W.Va., and Washington. She was last a substitute in McGuffey School District.

She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Prosperity. She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading and traveling, especially family trips.

On December 10, 1954, she married Robert George Hodinko, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Douglas (Melissa) Hodinko of Canonsburg; a daughter, Debra Lee Hodinko of Washington; and four grandchildren, Samuel, Hayden, Robert and Katie Hodinko.

World War II veteran affectionately called “Pap”

Joseph Arthur “Brud” Humbert, 91 of Washington, died Thursday, January 9, 2014, in Donnell House, Washington.

He was born May 21, 1922, in Washington, a son of Thomas Sherrard Humbert and Violet Louise Joslin Humbert.

Mr. Humbert left high school in his senior year to serve in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, where he received a Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with three bronze stars. He graduated from the U.S. Army Air Forces Technical School and served as a flight engineer. His aircraft crew regularly flew supplies of gasoline from India to China, over the Himalayas, known as “Flying the Hump.” He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces from November 1942 until being honorably discharged in November 1945. He served in the 24th Combat Unit and in the China-Burma-India Theater.

He later received his high school diploma November 1, 2001, at Trinity High School, at a ceremony for World War II veterans.

Mr. Humbert worked for Pennsylvania Transformer Co. for several years and Washington Steel Co. He went on to work for Washington County Housing Authority as a supervisor, until his retirement.

Affectionately known as “Pap,” he was a very kind and soft-spoken man who loved to tell stories of his experiences in the Army, especially when he and his crew had to bail out of their B-24 airplane over the Himalayan Mountains because of engine failure. They all survived and walked for a week before reaching help. He became a member of the Caterpillar Club because of successfully parachuting out of a disabled aircraft.

Mr. Humbert was a longtime member of American Legion Post 175. He belonged to Button and Bows square dance club for several years. He was a member of Washington Hospital Auxiliary, volunteering for several years until he had to retire because of health reasons.

On November 17, 1942, he married Elizabeth Patricia “Betty” Fonner, who died December 25, 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Joseph A. Humbert Jr. of Washington and Michael S. (Marsha) Humbert of Connellsville; a daughter, Patricia L. (Tom) O’Connor of Washington; eight grandchildren, Tamie (John) Devenney, Kelly “George” (Michael) Gray, Chris (Heather) O’Connor, Jason (Tina) Humbert, Nick (Renae) Humbert, Dana (David) Woodbury, Ryan (Rachel) Humbert and Andrea (Tommy) Karpency; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a brother, Thomas Humbert; two sisters, Janis Garceau and Ellen White; and a daughter-in-law, Patricia Ann Humbert.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and noon to 1:30 p.m., the time of service, Monday, January 13, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, with the Rev. Thomas D. O’Neil officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.

Greene County secretary

Lois Jean King, 78, of Nemacolin, died Friday, January 10, 2014, in her home, after a nine-month illness.

She was born September 19, 1935, in Fairdale, Cumberland Township, a daughter of the late Ernest and Mary Babyak Decker.

Surviving are three sons, Bill Balint of Nemacolin, Bob Balint and wife Phyllis of Arlington, Va., and John Kovach and wife Tammy of Moore, Okla.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Decker and wife Mary of Carmichaels and Donald Decker and wife Ida of Khedive; two sisters, Beverly Plicta and husband Bill of Carmichaels and Patricia Mays and husband Arthur of Maryland.

Mrs. King worked as a secretary in the Greene County Prothonotary and Sheriff’s Department and for Cumberland Township.

She was a member of Greene Valley Church of God, Crucible.

Mrs. King enjoyed painting pictures in her spare time.
