Lifelong member of Mapletown United Methodist Church
H. Miller Barb, 90, of Greensboro (Mapletown), died at 10:43 a.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2014, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.
He was born January 30, 1923, in Mapletown, a son of the late Charles Alexander and Lessie Nina Minor Barb.
Mr. Barb graduated from Mapletown High School, received his bachelor’s degree in 1948 from Waynesburg College and earned his master’s degree in guidance counseling from West Virginia University.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II from February 1943 until December 1945 with the 2126th Army Air Forces Base Unit as a gunnery instructor on B-17, B-24 and B-29 aircraft in the South Pacific.
Mr. Barb taught school for one year at LaFayette Junior High School, Uniontown, and was a math teacher and guidance counselor at Mapletown High School, retiring in 1981.
He served as a lay speaker, Sunday school superintendent and on various other committees at Mapletown United Methodist Church. He also served as an assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 1270 in Bobtown and Mapletown. He was a member of Valley Lodge 459, F&AM, Masontown, Sons of the American Revolution, the Gideons International-Greene County Camp and Cornerstone Genealogical Society.
For many years, Mr. Barb volunteered at the gift shop at Greene County Memorial Hospital and delivered daffodils with his wife, Dora, for American Cancer Society.
As a lifelong resident of Mapletown, Mr. Barb served as a sexton for Monongahela Hill Cemetery since 1962.
On June 11, 1948, he married Dora L. Dusenberry, who died September 10, 2013.
Surviving are two daughters, Holly B. Stevenson and husband Gary and Joy B. Born and husband Robert, both of Greensboro; seven grandchildren, Brian Stevenson, Sara Parker and husband Bill, Erin Stevenson, Walter Born, Amanda Adkins and husband Kris, Jeremy Born and Dale Born; four great-grandchildren, Christopher, Brayden, Matthew and Kara; and nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a brother, Ewing Barb, and a half brother, Charles Barbe.
Family and friends are welcome from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4:30 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Yoskovich Funeral Home, 724-966-5500, Martin J. Yoskovich, funeral director, 300 South Vine Street (Route 88), Carmichaels, and also from 10 until 11 a.m., the hour of service, Friday, January 17, in Mapletown United Methodist Church, Greensboro. Dorothy C. Buckel, 89, of Georgetown, Hanover Township, formerly of Burgettstown, passed away Monday, January 13, 2014, in Heritage Valley Beaver Medical Center.
She was born April 22, 1924, the youngest child of the late Earl and Ada Smith Merryman.
On March 17, 1945, she married William J. Buckel, who preceeded her in death November 5, 1990.
She enjoyed square dancing with her husband, playing cards and Scrabble.
Surviving are four children, Alvin L. Buckel and wife Joanne of Houston, Grace Todaro and husband Charles of Johnstown, Debra Tingler and husband William of Georgetown and Carol Davis and husband James of Ashboro, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, Megan Agrafiotis and husband Jim, Amanda Canty and husband Mike, Sherry Deitrich, Dana Bongiorni and husband Rich, Amy Williams and husband Earl, William Lockhart, Christy Vagnozzi, Charles W. Camp and wife Angie, William Tingler and Frank Tingler and wife Danielle; several great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Merryman of California and Hazel Hewitt of Claysville; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, are four brothers, Marion, Roscoe, Robert and Harry Merryman, and a grandson, Jeremy Lockhart.

Cindy Lea Campbell, 50, of Washington, died Tuesday, January 14, 2014, in Washington Hospital.

Bethlehem Mines retiree played the harmonica
Robert H. Carey Jr., 87, of Bentleyville, formerly of Fallowfield Township, died Monday, January 13, 2014, in Mon Valley Hospital.
He was born March 30, 1926, in Masontown, a son of the late Robert H. Sr. and Minnie G. Mechling Carey.
Mr. Carey was a 1944 graduate of Ellsworth High School.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the 704th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He served in campaigns in Central Europe and Rhineland. For his service, he was awarded the Distinguished Unit Badge, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
In 1990, he retired from Bethlehem Mines, Mine 51, Ellsworth, and was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 1197.
Mr. Carey was a member of the former Memory Chapel, Eighty Four.
As a child, he played the harmonica, accompanying his mother, and he continued to play his entire life. He loved watching the Pittsburgh Penguins on television and enjoyed gardening.
On May 10, 1973, he married Betty J. Fisher, who died April 23, 2010.
Surviving are a daughter, Roberta Adams of Hamburg, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Ericka Jo Adams of Baltimore, Md., and Robert Adams of Hamburg; two sisters, Betty Myers of Bentleyville and Sara McIlvaine of Sebring, Fla.; a brother, Hugh “Buzzy” Carey and wife Mildred of Monongahela; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends will be received from 4 to 6 p.m., the hour of services, Thursday, January 16, in Greenlee Funeral Home, 619 Main Street, Bentleyville, with the Rev. Andy Scott officiating. Private interment will be in Beallsville Cemetery.

Linda J. Daugherty, 58, of Canonsburg, formerly of Eighty Four and Muse, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, January 11, 2014, in her home.
She was born November 27, 1955, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Albert “Hoopy” and Maxine May Satterfield Summers Jr.
Mrs. Daugherty attended Canon-McMillan schools and lived most of her life in the Muse and Eighty Four areas since 1996.
She enjoyed crocheting and crafts.
On April 26, 1974, she married John T. Daugherty IV, who passed away January 7, 2013.
Surviving are two sons, John T. (Francis) Daugherty V and Albert Michael Daugherty, both of Canonsburg; two daughters, Christina Lynn (Doyle) Daugherty Brooks of Avalon and Linda Jo Ann Daugherty of Eighty Four; three brothers, Wayne G. (Antoinette) Summers of McKees Rocks, John A. (Sandi) Summers of Washington and Ray V. (Jamie) Summers of Muse; two sisters, Margaret J. Michrina and Elsie Summers, both of Washington; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to her husband and parents, is a brother, Michael Summers.

Suzanne H. Deter, 76, of Jefferson, died Tuesday, January 14, 2014, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.
She was born December 2, 1937, in Homeville, a daughter of the late Homer and Sarah Kathryn Johnson Watters.
Mrs. Deter attended Jefferson-Morgan High School and Rolling Meadows Church of God.
She lived all of her married life in the Stoney Point area.
On August 10, 1957, in Frederick, Md., she married Albert Deter, who survives.
Also surviving are three children, Tammie Peters and husband John of Morgantown, W.Va., Albert Deter and wife Marlene of Waynesburg and Sarah Lawrence and husband Roger of Jefferson; six grandchildren, Heather Clark, Petie Deter, John Peters Jr., Justin Peters, Brandon Lawrence and Katie Lawrence; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ron Watters and wife Drema of Waynesburg.

Washington High School football team volunteer
Robert Wayne Evans, 48, of Washington, died Monday, January 13, 2014, in his home.
He was born December 24, 1965, in Washington, a son of Samuel Evans Sr. and Ruth R. Johnson Evans, who are deceased.
He was a graduate of Washington High School, where he was a volunteer assistant equipment manager for the high school football team. He was always well-liked and played a big role for the team.
Mr. Evans was very active in the Toys for Tots program every year and enjoyed fishing.
He was employed in auto service departments and worked for South Hills Chrysler in the past.
Surviving are a son, Brody A. Evans of Avella, and a longtime companion, Beth Ann Kinsky.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Joseph Evans and Samuel Evans Jr.

U.S. Navy veteran was local businessman
William “Bill” T.S. Fitch, 76, of Washington, died Monday, January 13, 2014, in Washington Hospital.
He was born October 12, 1937, in Washington, a son of the late T.S. and Janet Reed Fitch.
Mr. Fitch was a 1955 graduate of Northwestern Military and Naval Academy in Lake Geneva, Wis. He went on to graduate from Yale University in 1959.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. After his service, he graduated from Harvard Business School. He was a local businessman and was associated with Washington Steel, as well as his own businesses.
Mr. Fitch was an avid golfer and a member of Nemacolin Country Club for more than 40 years.
In November of 1968, he married Natasha Ignatieff, who survives. She lives in Noumea, New Caledonia.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, Colin (Renee) Fitch Esq. of Washington, Eric (Kathy) Fitch of Upper St. Clair and Professor Tecumseh (Gesche) Fitch, Ph.D. of Vienna, Austria; brother Thomas E. Fitch of New York, N.Y.; three sisters, Mary Keliikipi of California, Mundy (Scott) Fergus of Washington and Madeleine Fitch-Pitcher of Oakmont; two grandchildren, Erin and Tommy Fitch; and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a daughter, Hilary Fitch; brother Colin Fitch; and sister Gray Scariot.

Ruth E. Larimer, 83, of Center Township, Greene County, died Tuesday, January 14, 2014, in her home.
She was born May 10, 1930, a daughter of the late Harry Franklin Coffman Sr. and Lizzie Mae Lear Coffman.
On August 25, 1948, she married Roy B. Larimer, who died December 13, 2013.
Mrs. Larimer resided in Greene County for the past 30 years and was a homemaker.
She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and word puzzles.
Surviving are four sons, Roy A. Larimer (Marie) of Bentleyville, Alan F. Larimer of Apollo, Glen W. Larimer (Linda) of Saltsburg and Claude W. Larimer (Maicar) of Cambridge, Md.; three daughters, Susan R. Larimer, Sharon M. Wilder of Johnson City, Tenn., and Cathy Ann Larimer; 23 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was the last of her immediate family. Deceased are three brothers and two sisters.

Richard “R.J.” Lawry Jr., 25, of Marianna, died Monday, January 13, 2014, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
He was born January 18, 1988, in Washington, a son of Richard H. Lawry Sr. and Jackie Pierce Huffman, both of Marianna and who survive.
He was a 2007 graduate of Bethlehem-Center High School and worked for J.R. Riggs Home Remodeling of Washington.
Mr. Lawry enjoyed being with his family and friends, motorcycling and working on cars. He was always willing to help and lend a hand when needed.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Timothy Pierce and Jeremy Lawry, both of Marianna; stepfather Donald Huffman; three stepbrothers, Josh Flemming of Bentleyville, Randy Moore of Washington and Travis Moore of Marianna; paternal grandfather James Lawry of Houston; stepgrandmother Jayne Brady of Fredericktown; niece Lena Pierce of Marianna; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Deceased are a sister, Tiffany Pierce Verno, who died September 18, 2006; maternal grandparents, Hazlett “Dude” Pierce and Carol Pierce; and paternal grandmother, Isabelle Jean Lawry.

Sephora A. “Nan” Lucas, 77, of Salem, Ohio, died at 2:05 a.m. Monday, January 13, 2014, in Circle of Care, Salem.
She was born April 19, 1936, in Carmichaels, a daughter of the late Charles C. and Florence M. Crago Plues.
Mrs. Lucas was a secretary for Salem-Republic Rubber Co., retiring in 2001, and previously was a secretary for Dr. Robert Foster.
She was Presbyterian, a 1954 graduate of Cumberland Township High School, Carmichaels, and a 53-year resident of the Salem area.
Deceased are her husband, John F. Lucas, whom she married July 2, 1955, and who preceded her in death January 29, 2011, and two sisters, Carolyn Jane Plues and Shirley M. Taylor.
Surviving are two sisters, F. Charlene (Stephen) Rapchak of Lexington, Ky., and Victoria S. (Daniel) Rendine of Tigard, Ore.; a niece, Larisa (Rapchak) Erwin of Ashburn, Va.; and several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Burial will be held at a later date in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township.

Bernard P. Marin, 71, of Muse, died unexpectedly Monday, January 13, 2014.
He was born March 29, 1942, in Coverdale, a son of the late John and Susan Drost Marin.
He was an active member of Holy Rosary Church, Muse, where he helped with everything and anything. He also belonged to Knights of Columbus, Franciscans of Pittsburgh and Legion of Mary.
At the time of his death, he was a custodian at Frank Sarris Public Library and previously worked in shipping for Cooper Industries and All-Clad Metalcrafters.
Surviving are seven brothers, Frank Marin and Edward Marin, both of Canonsburg, John Marin of Morgan, Eugene Marin of Muse, Richard Marin of Greensburg, Robert Marin of Canonsburg and David Marin of Castle Shannon; two sisters, Diane Sutherland of Eldridge, Iowa, and Rita (Barbara) Woodruff of Erie, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are two brothers, Thomas Marin and Anthony Marin, and two sisters, Mildred Marin and Catherine Marin.

Sue A. McKay, 69, of Bethel Park, passed away peacefully Monday, January 13, 2014, with her family by her side.
Her beloved husband of 51 years, John A. “Jack” McKay, survives.
She was the mother of Laura (Gerry) Sipe and Jeffrey (Ray Schlachter) McKay; grandmother of Michael Sipe and Breanna Eichenlaub; great-grandmother of Cassidy and Zane Eichenlaub and Isabella Wright-Sipe; sister of Donna (George) Stish, Dorothy (Carl) Henderson, Richard (Deb) Anderson and Katherine (Wade) Spooner; and daughter of the late Richard W. Anderson and Helen (Miller) Anderson.
Mrs. McKay retired from her office manager position at Ryan Homes after 30 years of dedicated service.
She enjoyed annual vacations in Aruba with her husband.
Her favorite hobbies included cooking, gardening and reading, but most importantly, her life revolved around her family, along with her true passion for her great-grandchildren.

Enjoyed fishing and gardening
Doris Jean Gray Moore, 69, of Aleppo, Springhill Township, died Tuesday, January 14, 2014, in her home, after battling a cancer-related illness since July.
She was born July 5, 1944, in Powhaten Point, Ohio, a daughter of the late Worley and Irene Pauline Gray.
Mrs. Moore had resided in the Scenery Hill area most of her married life, prior to moving to Springhill Township in the early 2000s.
She enjoyed fishing, gardening and helping raise her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
On May 5, 1964, she married Charles Wendell Moore, who died January 14, 2008.
Surviving are two daughters, Katherine Irene Forsythe of Grafton, W.Va., and Glenna Sue Lucy of Springhill Township, with whom she shared a home; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Raymond, Edward and Robert Gray; two sisters, Pearl Edgar and Mary Herrod; and several nieces and nephews.

34-year RCA, GE Aerospace employee
Albert S. Paraska, 79, of Monroe Township, N.J., formerly of Manifold, South Strabane Township, died Saturday, January 11, 2014.
He was born November 21, 1934, in Canonsburg, a son of the late Steve J. and Camille Greenawalt Paraska.
Mr. Paraska was a graduate of Trinity High School in 1952. He became certified in electronics from Electronics Institute of Pittsburgh in 1961.
He was employed by RCA and GE Aerospace for 34 years. He also worked at Joy Manufacturing Co., Tactec Systems Inc, Route 19 Drive-In and Basle Theatre.
Mr. Paraska was a former member of RCA Athletic Association, South Strabane Township Parks and Recreation Commission, for which he was also treasurer, South Strabane Jaycees, Commissioners Staff Boy Scouts of America and ASQC of Philadelphia. He was also a member of Bears Club and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7288 of Calabash, N.C. He also enjoyed golf, bowling, hunting and camping.
Mr. Paraska served in the U.S. Navy and also in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1957 to 1963. He served aboard aircraft carrier USS Wasp and held the rank of Electrician’s Mate, third class. He also served in the Pennsylvania National Guard, where he held the rank of sergeant-E5.
Surviving are two daughters, Lorie (Robert) Dulaney of Washington and Lisa (Michael) Busco of Monroe Township, with whom he made his home; two brothers, Herbert J. Paraska of Bridgeville and Jerry (Betty) Paraska of Houston; grandchildren Robert and Alisha Dulaney and Marianne, Giovanna, Nicole and Olivia Busco; and several nieces and nephews.
His son, Mark A. Paraska, is deceased.

Navy vet worked at Lindenwood Golf Course
Robert E. Patten Sr., 78, of Canonsburg, formerly of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., died Monday, January 13, 2014, in Donnell House, Washington, surrounded by his family.
He was born February 2, 1935, in Pittsburgh, a son of Edwin and Annabell Simpson Patten.
Mr. Patten was a 1953 graduate of Washington High School.
He was a 15-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he was a Radioman 1, serving from 1953 to 1968 during the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Mr. Patten was a mail carrier with the U.S. Post Office in Jacksonville, Fla., before retiring in October 1992.
After his retirement, he worked for the Postal Union Office, then as a courier for Daggart Printing and later worked at Deerwood Country Club, all in Jacksonville. After moving to Pennsylvania, he worked at Lindenwood Golf Course until failing health forced his retirement.
He was a member of Avery United Methodist Church, North Franklin Township.
Mr. Patten was an avid bowler, bowling for 40 years in leagues and was a certified coach for the youth bowling league. He enjoyed golf and watching the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He had a special dog, Sadie.

One of the first women to work at Maple Creek Mine
Roberta L. Phillians Ross, 68, of Clarksville, died Tuesday, January 14, 2014, in Donnell House, Washington, following a five-month battle with cancer.
She was born March 17, 1945, in Brownsville, the only child of George H. and Blanche Shipley Phillians.
Mrs. Ross spent most of her life in Clarksville and was a 1963 graduate of Bethlehem-Center High School.
She graduated from Penn Commercial and worked for the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, Md., in the late 1960s. In the late 1970s, she was one of the first women hired to work at Maple Creek Mine in Somerset Township, where she was a shuttle car operator.
In 1990, she graduated from Waynesburg College, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing. Upon graduation, she worked as a registered nurse at Greene County Memorial Hospital and was last employed at Country Meadows in South Fayette Township.
She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her friends, and she was a good storyteller. She loved to shop, sew and collect fabric. Over the years, she owned several dogs, Barfy, Cindy, Trevor and Oden, whom she loved very much.
Surviving are four daughters, Randi and husband Tim Marodi of Bentleyville, Kelly Ross and fiancé Etzer Seraphin of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Morgan and husband James Muhly of St. Clairsville, Ohio, and Taylor and husband Chris Callegari of Holly Springs, N.C. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Abigail and Katherine Marodi, James, Oliver, Benjamin and Hazel Muhly and Lola Callegari.

Washington homemaker enjoyed crafts, quilting
Marilyn Vaughn Simms, 77, of Washington, died Monday, January 13, 2014, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township, following a lengthy illness.
She was born May 12, 1936, a daughter of Harry Newland and Ruby Mankey Newland.
Mrs. Simms was a homemaker and enjoyed crafts and quilting.
On August 18, 1959, she married Edward C. “Sonny” Simms Jr., who died October 3, 2006.
Surviving are two sons, Vincent L. Simms of Castle Shannon and Jason D. Simms of Washington.

Ruth Naomi “Gram” Stoneking, 88, of Fox Hill Road, Garrison, died Monday, January 13, 2014, in her home.
She was born May 28, 1925, near Burton, W.Va., a daughter of the late James Roupe and Millie May Crouser Roupe.
Mrs. Stoneking was a homemaker and a member of Grandview United Methodist Church, Garrison.
She enjoyed cooking and being funny.
Surviving are two sons, Larry Stoneking and wife Jeannie and Albert Ray Stoneking, both of Garrison; five grandchildren, Angela, Doug, Mark, Troy and Craig Stoneking; seven great-grandchildren, Nathan Tedrow, Amanda Anderson, Rachel Barnhart and Anthony, Dylan, Matt and Kayla Stoneking; and three great-great-grandchildren, Julia, Abigail and Waylon.
Her husband of 67 years, Wilson Carl Stoneking, died August 8, 2009.
Deceased, in addition to her husband and parents, are a sister, Marie Christian; five brothers, Leo, Ralph, Harvey, Bud and Thomas Lee Roupe; three half brothers; three half sisters; a great-great-grandson, Jace Lee Barnhart; and a great-great-granddaughter, Piper Lynne Barnhart.

Anna M. Supek, 90, of Manifold, South Strabane Township, died Friday, January 10, 2014, in Orange Regional Medical Center, Middletown, N.Y., with her loving family by her side.
She was born July 22, 1923, in Manifold, a daughter of Leon and Caroline Lajack Wojcuich.
During World War II, Mrs. Supek worked as an inspector at the defense plant in Dearborn, Mich. She also worked for Kress Box Co. and Home Laundry in Washington. Later, she managed Bard’s Dairyland in Washington Mall until its closing and retired in 1985 after 10 years of working in the dietary department of Washington Hospital.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Meadow Lands and its Christian Mothers and Guild and Rosary Society. She also belonged to Soroptimist Club of Washington, serving as club secretary.
On March 5, 1946, she married Raymond C. Supek, who died November 11, 1994.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Ann Mataraza, who was the wife of the late Patrick Mataraza of Pine Bush, N.Y.; a son, Frank Supek and wife Toni of Manifold; five grandchildren, Jason Supek of Lemoyne, Ryan Supek of Herndon, Va., Patrick Mataraza (Lori) of Pine Bush, Ann Barron (Jason) of City Island, N.Y., and Michael Mataraza (Jessica) of Pine Bush; five great-grandchildren, Patrick Mataraza IV, Kaitlin Mataraza, Tessa and Jake Barron and Michaela Mataraza; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the last of her immediate family. Deceased are seven brothers, Walter, Frank, Raymond, Rudolph, Joseph, John and Andrew Wojcuich, and four sisters, Mary Bronczek, Barbara Wojcuich, Sophia Buhovechy and Frances Jindra.

Dear mother, devoted wife
Kathleen Mary Wood, 71, of Jeannette, went to be with her Heavenly Father Monday, January 13, 2014, after her battle with cancer.
She was born June 24, 1942, in Monessen, and graduated from Monessen High School in 1959.
She will always be fondly remembered by her family and friends as the dearest mother, the most devoted wife and best friend to her sisters. She was remarkable, always so good, unselfish and kind. Few on this Earth were her equal. Always loving, thoughtful, gentle and true, she was honorable and upright in all her ways. She enjoyed her family and her home. She was a generous, loving, supportive woman who always put others before herself. Possessing a true servant’s heart, she faithfully cared for and nurtured her family, making them her priority in life. The lives she formed and that were touched by her love will be forever grateful for her continued love and guidance. She will always be remembered and forever missed.
Married for 52 years, Kathleen and Jack Dempsey Wood Sr. raised their six children and a grandchild.
Survivors include Jack Dempsey Wood Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., Judith Diane Wood of Richeyville, James David Wood of West Virginia, Joann Denise Wood Matruski of Virginia Beach, Va., Janet Dolores Wood of Bristow, Va., Jacob Daniel Wood of Virginia Beach and Kathleen Wood of Jeannette; grandchildren Jack III, Jesse, Sarah, Cole, Julia, Emma, James, Ethan, Sarah, Mason, Isabelle, Mackenna and Maddox; brother James of Centerville, Va.; and sisters Carol Voelker and Elizabeth Mazur, both of Monessen.
Deceased are her parents, Andrew and Isabelle Hotochin, and her brothers, Andrew and Robert Hotochin.
