Navy vet worked at Lindenwood Golf Course

Robert E. Patten Sr., 78, of Canonsburg, formerly of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., died Monday, January 13, 2014, in Donnell House, Washington, surrounded by his family.

He was born February 2, 1935, in Pittsburgh, a son of Edwin and Annabell Simpson Patten.

Mr. Patten was a 1953 graduate of Washington High School.

He was a 15-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he was a Radioman 1, serving from 1953 to 1968 during the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Mr. Patten was a mail carrier with the U.S. Post Office in Jacksonville, Fla., before retiring in October 1992.

After his retirement, he worked for the Postal Union Office, then as a courier for Daggart Printing and later worked at Deerwood Country Club, all in Jacksonville. After moving to Pennsylvania, he worked at Lindenwood Golf Course until failing health forced his retirement.

He was a member of Avery United Methodist Church, North Franklin Township.

Mr. Patten was an avid bowler, bowling for 40 years in leagues and was a certified coach for the youth bowling league. He enjoyed golf and watching the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Surviving are his wife of 21 years, Donna Ward Chadwick Patten; two daughters, Luanna Donnelly (Dennis) of Londonderry, N.H., and Beverly Penvose (Robert) of Houston; four sons, Robert E. Patten Jr. of Norfolk, Va., Paul Patten (Julie) of Sykesville, Md., William Patten (Kristina) of Gainesville, Fla., and David Chadwick of Washington; 13 grandchildren, Denny (Sara) and Sean Donnelly, Robert Penvose Jr. (Annie), Kristie Coppola (Dan), Mackenzie, Nina and Zachary Patten and Stephanie, Alexander, Natalie, Marcus, Jacob and Lillian Chadwick; three great-grandchildren, Ian and Katie Penvose and Lily Liu Coppola; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Anderson of Washington; and many nieces and nephews.

He had a special dog, Sadie.

Deceased are a sister, Margaret Barney, and a brother, John Patten.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday January 17, in Avery United Methodist Church, 1100 Gabby Avenue, Washington, PA 15301, with Pastor Ruth Simmons officiating. Interment will follow in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to Donnell House, in care of Hospice of Washington Hospital, 155 Wilson Avenue, Washington, PA 15301.
