Homemaker was avid reader

Lois E. Brubaker, 79, of Monongahela, died Tuesday, January 21, 2014, in Monongahela Valley Hospital, Monongahela.

She was born April 4, 1934, in Mingo Junction, Ohio, a daughter of Gerald and Cecelia Bailey Cox.

Mrs. Brubaker was a member of First United Methodist Church in Monongahela and its United Methodist Women.

A homemaker, she was an avid reader, enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, playing Chinese checkers and flower gardening. Above all, she truly loved and doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are a son, Keith Brubaker and wife Joyce of Washington; three daughters, Lynn Glova and husband Steve of Ginger Hill, Lisa Tatar and husband Ronald of Moundsville, W.Va., and Lauren McKinnon and husband Jim of Irwin; five grandchildren, Alexis Glova, Robin Porter and husband Harrison, Ronald Tatar III, Bryan Tatar and wife Jennifer, Eimile McKinnon; eight great-grandchildren, Grace, Rick, Rylie, Quinn, Lilli, Isabella, Jake and Elena.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Forrest Brubaker, who died June 6, 2013; a great-grandson, Regan; and two brothers, Lee and Russell Cox.

Friends will be received from noon to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 25, with the Rev. Alan Morrison officiating. Interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery.

Madonna Catholic School teacher

Mary Ellen Donovan, 65, of Charleroi, Fallowfield Township, died Tuesday, January 21, 2014, in Family Hospice and Palliative Care Center for Compassionate Care, Pittsburgh.

She was born March 31, 1948, in Uniontown, a daughter of Ramond and Anne Brehen Grote.

After graduating in 1966 from Uniontown High School, she received her teaching degree from California State University. She had worked as an elementary teacher in Albert-Gallatin School District for five years. She then taught for more than 20 years in Madonna Catholic School in Monongahela, where she retired in 2013.

Mrs. Donovan was a member of St. Damien of Molokai Parish (Transfiguration Church) in Monongahela.

Surviving are her husband, Harry Donovan, who she married June 22, 1974; two sons, William H. Donovan of Pittsburgh and Michael W. Donovan of California; twin daughters, Holly M. Donovan and Laura and husband Peter Perrier of Pittsburgh; two brothers, Gerard and wife Ceane Grote of Smock and Raymond and wife Amy Grote of Connellsville; two sisters, Nancy Volk of Grove City and Janet and husband Harry “Sonny” Musgrove of Uniontown; and her mother-in-law, Mary Donovan of Monongahela.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Ramond and Anne Brehen Grote; her stepmother, Eleanor (Catney) Grote; as well as numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Born in Waynesburg

Sara “Sally” Louise Eikleberry, 75, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2014, in Kobacker House, Columbus.

She was born August 8, 1938, in Waynesburg.

A 1956 graduate of Morgantown (W.Va.) High School, she also attended West Virginia University.

Surviving are her children, Scott (Alex) Eikleberry and Sheri (Jim) Whisler; grandchildren Jeremiah and Aaron Whisler, Rory and Niklaus Eikleberry; a brother, Albert Zimmerman Jr; and ex-husband Heber Gene Eikleberry. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lena and Albert Zimmerman Sr.

Owner of Country Fresh Market

Mike Giles, 56, of Millsboro, died Tuesday, January 21, 2014, in Monongahela Valley Hospital.

He was born September 5, 1957, in Waynesburg, a son of Albert Giles of Millsboro and Suzanne Burrell.

Mr. Giles was a 1975 graduate of Bethlehem-Center High School and he attended Christian Assembly of God in Bentleyville.

He was the owner and operator of Country Fresh Market and Fredericktown Produce in Centerville.

His greatest pleasure was spending time with his grandchildren and family boating on the Monongahela River. His gentle nature and ready smile will be missed.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Donna Morris Giles, whom he married October 18, 1975; children Valerie Jean Giles and Adam Michael Giles (Jaime), all of Millsboro; grandchildren Brooke Madison Williams, Jonah Michael Giles and Preslynn Jeanne Giles; siblings Teddy Giles, Danny Giles (Karen), Amy Pashea (John), Dayna Giovanelli (Mark) and Cindy Jean Stopko (Robbie); and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased is a brother, John Bodnar.

Joseph George Gricar, 66, of Canonsburg, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014, in Canonsburg General Hospital, following a 10-year illness.

Teacher, businessman, devoted church member

Richard Earl “Dick” Guthrie passed away Tuesday morning, January 21, 2014, in Van Wert, Ohio. 

He was born January 11, 1937, in Washington.

A standout wrestler and football player at Trinity High School, he attended Taylor University in Upland, Ind., on a football scholarship.

After college, he joined the staff at Peters Township High School, where he taught for 18 years. After leaving teaching, he started ServiceMaster Cleaning Services by Guthrie, which grew into a thriving business.

Since 1964, Mr. Guthrie was a devoted member of Upper St. Clair Alliance Church, where at various times he sang in the choir, led the Monday night prayer meeting, taught Sunday school and served as properties manager. He was head elder and, at the time of his death, elder emeritus. He was active in Rotary Club and, for a time, was president of Peters Township Chamber of Commerce. He volunteered for many years at Washington City Mission, where he also served a term as chairman of the board.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Johns-Guthrie of Van Wert, Ohio, who brought so much joy to his last months. He was loved and will be missed by his two children, Mrs. Shari (Walter) McRae of Richmond, Va., and Dr. Steven (Julie) Guthrie of Nashville, Tenn. His loss is also felt deeply by his sisters, Joyce Guthrie and Crystal Guthrie; his seven grandchildren, Ben (Courtney) McRae, Erin (Jose) Nogueira, Jacob (Samantha) McRae and Joel, Noah, Sophie and Lucy Guthrie; and a great-grandchild, Chloe Jayne McRae. His beloved wife of 52 years, Sally Guthrie, passed away in 2011. Also deceased is a grandson, Samuel Lewis Guthrie. He was cherished by his many nieces, nephews. aunts, uncles and cousins.

Above all, Mr. Guthrie was profoundly devoted to his Lord, Jesus Christ, in whose presence he now finds rest and healing.

Fallowfield Twp. resident

Andrew D. Kalnicky, 91, of Fallowfield Township, passed away unexpectedly in his home, Monday, January 20, 2014.

He was born November 24, 1922, in Charleroi, a son of the late Andrew and Julia Polomka Kalnicky.

Mr. Kalnicky served in the European Theater during World War II with the 71st Division of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Coal Center, Veterans Club of Charleroi and Senior Bowling League at Tan-O-Bell Lanes in Bentleyville.

Mr. Kalnicky was retired from Conrail where he worked for more than 41 years as a clerk.

Left to cherish his loving memory are a son, Ronald D. Kalnicky and daughter-in-law, Nancy; a daughter, Andrea Ann Russo and husband, Gene; grandchildren, Jennifer DiPietrantonio and husband, Theron, Jason Kalnicky and wife, Carla, Justin Kalnicky and wife, Jennifer, and Justin Russo and wife, Lesley; great-granddaughters, Lairah and Rya DiPietrantonio and Giuliana and Giannina Russo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle, August 24, 2008; and sisters, Julia Tuman, Anna K. Jobes and Helen Ruth Hanas.

Nickles Bakery driver was Greene County resident

John Earl Lemley, 74, of Waynesburg, died at 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, January 21, 2014, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home in Waynesburg, following a brief illness.

He was born Thursday, August 17, 1939, in Waynesburg, a son of the late Fred Scott Lemley and Mary J. Staggers Lemley.

Mr. Lemley was a lifelong resident of Greene County.

He was a member of James Farrell American Legion Post 330 and Moose Lodge 461, both of Waynesburg.

Mr. Lemley enjoyed deer hunting.

He worked as a delivery driver for Nickles Bakery for many years.

His wife, Emma “Sue” DeBolt Kiger, whom he married on September 7, 1980, died November 23, 1999.

Surviving are two stepdaughters, Kathy K. (Don) Evans of Aleppo and Susan K. (Bob) Bittner of California; three stepsons, Raymond S. (Kathy) Kiger of Holbrook, Ralph E. (Mary) Kiger of Holbrook and Charles R. (Michelle) Kiger of West Finley; a brother-in-Law, Wymer (Sharon) Cooper of South Park; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a sister, Patricia Cooper and an infant brother, Fred Scott Lemley.

Loving daughter and sister

Celine Benecia Loether, 16, of Eighty Four, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2014, in her home, with her family and dear friend, Abby, by her side, after a long and courageous battle following complications from a bone marrow transplant in May 2013, due to sickle cell disease. 

She was born April 3, 1997, in Bois Blanc, Haiti, and was sustained in life by cherished friend Pastor V. Pierre until her loving family brought her home in July 1997.

Celine is the beloved daughter of David J. and Andrea M. Loether; cherished sister of Jeremy and wife Erin Loether, Emily and husband Sean Hutchins and Grant and wife Nicole Loether; dear granddaughter of Vida Potter; loving niece of Aunt Wendy, Aunt Vida, Uncle Scott and Aunt Susan; and aunt to six nieces and nephews, Ben and Gracie Loether, Payton and Crosby Hutchins, Wyatt Strickland and Declan Loether.

She was welcomed into Heaven by her dear sister, Lindsay N. Loether; grandfather Andrew N. Potter and dear family member Sue L. Hutchins.

Celine experienced a lot of living in her 16 years. She experienced her seventh birthday with Make-A-Wish in Orlando, Fla., in Disney World. She had a joy for traveling with family near and far from the beaches in Hawaii, swimming with the dolphins in Jamaica, summers at the beach, cruising in the Caribbean, the far reaches of Key West, Fla., and the wilds of Alaska.

She was an excellent swimmer with a love of glitz, glamour and shoes. Her two dogs, Cooper and Nilla, never left her side, including visits to the hospital and were with her until the very end.

Many special friends meant the world to her. Jackie Zeni provided loving educational and personal support through out her entire life. Cathy Campese and Rachel Lauer were selflessly devoted nurse practitioners who provided more than medical support. Nicole Steele provided comforting music and friendship. The nursing staff of 9B and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and tireless and passionate physicians of BMT, Dr. Krish, Dr. Goyal, Dr. Mark, Dr. Randy and all the attending physicians from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit provided outstanding care. Amanda was important for reasons only she can understand. The Central Blood Bank and the thousands of donors kept Celine alive.

Her vibrance, enduring spirit and bravery will be part of our lives forever.

Richard Vincent Miller, 55, of New Freeport (Deep Valley), died unexpectedly at 4:55 p.m., Wednesday, January 22, 2014, in his home.

Retired Washington Steel engineer was avid golfer

Harold E. Moore Jr., 84, of Washington, died unexpectedly Monday, January 20, 2014.

He was born December 25, 1929, in Washington, a son of the late Harold Ewing Sr. and Mary Gubanish Moore.

Mr. Moore was a graduate of Washington High School. He attended Washington & Jefferson College and the University of Pittsburgh.

He was a member of Faith United Presbyterian Church, South Strabane Township.

Mr. Moore retired after 30 years as an engineer from Washington Steel Corp. during which time he was involved in the Junior Achievement program.

He was a longtime member of American Legion Post 175 and BPOE Elks Lodge 776 and a member of the Association of Iron & Steel Engineers.

Mr. Moore loved the sport of golf and was an avid golfer participating in many tournaments.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict under the rank of corporal.

On September 8, 1956, he married Jean Ross Moore, who survives, along with son Gary Ewing (Angela) Moore of Avon, Conn.; daughter Susan Diane (Darren) Price of Ormond Beach, Fla.; sister Norma Jean Widmer of Bridgeville; five grandchildren, Abby, Lindsay and Adam Moore of Connecticut and Alex and Blake Price of Florida; stepgranddaughter Nicole (Jimmy) Gray of Lake Worth, Fla.; twin stepgreat-grandchildren, Chris and Alison Gray of Florida; and several sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Deceased are several brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.

95-year-old resident of Southmont

Ella Ann Leppert Paul, 95, of Washington, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 21, 2014, in Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.

She was born May 14, 1918, in Nova Scotia, Canada, a daughter of Max and Selma Krebbs Leppert, who immigrated to Canada from Germany in the early 1900s with four of their 10 children.

Mrs. Paul was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church of Washington.   

Before her marriage, she was secretary to the director of nursing at Washington Hospital. 

Mrs. Paul enjoyed her gardens, quilting, sewing, baking and especially being with her children and grandchildren. 

On October 2, 1948, she married Sam G. Paul, who died in 2008.

Their two children, George S. Paul and Jane Kislear, both of Washington, survive. 

Also surviving are grandchildren Grant S. Paul of McDonald, Phallen Kislear (Joel) Ward of Monessen and Jordan Kislear (Toni McLaughlin) of Falls Church, Va.; a great-grandson, Ethan Paul; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are her brothers Alfred Leppert, Erwin Leppert, Max Leppert, George Leppert and Theodore Leppert; sisters Martha Brzinka, Elfreida Leppert, Adelhide “Heidle” Bader and Edith Rutan; and son-in-law Pete Kislear.

Licensed pilot still rode motorcycle at 85

Chester J. Risker, 92, of Elizabeth Township, died Tuesday, January 21, 2014.

He was born May 21, 1921, in West Newton. He was a son of the late George and Laura Curry Risker and husband of the late Ethel L. Maurer Risker, who died August 14, 2007.

Mr. Risker was a retired motor inspector and electrician for the former U.S. Steel National Tube Works. He was a member of F&AM Blythe Lodge 593 in West Newton, Elizabeth Veterans of Foreign Wars, Southpointe Marcellus Shale Chamber of Commerce and Honda Gold Wing Club. He rode his motorcycle until he was 85 years old.

A World War II veteran, he was inducted into the U.S. Air Force as an airplane mechanic and then transferred to the Army during the Battle of the Bulge. He received numerous medals including Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze stars, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal and American Campaign Medal.

He was the first of three generations of licensed airplane pilots, which includes his son, Dale, and grandson, Cody.

Surviving are sons Chester G. “Butch” (Vicki) Risker of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Dale W. (Deborah) Risker of Joffre; grandchildren Scott Risker of Forward Township, Chad Risker of Cedar Key, Fla., Blake Risker of West Chester and Cody Risker of Olmsted Falls, Ohio; great-grandsons Joshua, Trey and Colton; a sister-in-law, Daryl Risker of West Newton; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sisters Betty Belser, Joan Messner and Gladys Kane, and a brother, Norman Risker.

Professor emeritus, California University of Pennsylvania

Dr. Lawrence D. (Larry) Romboski, 75, professor emeritus, California University of Pennsylvania, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 19, 1938, in Washington, a son of Lawrence and Pauline Popeck Romboski.

He graduated from Washington High School in 1955 and from Washington & Jefferson College with a degree in mathematics in 1959.

While at W&J, he lettered in basketball for four years. He started in all 73 games during that period and held the career scoring record for nine years. In 1956, he set the W&J single game scoring record with 43 points against Bethany, which still stands. In 1992, he was inducted into Washington-Greene County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. He was initiated into the W&J Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.

Upon graduation, he received a regular U.S. Army commission and served as a lieutenant from 1959 to 1962. He successfully completed both paratrooper and ranger training. For two years, he was stationed in San Francisco, where in addition to his other duties, he co-captained the National Army Air Defense basketball championship team.

Dr. Romboski was an instructor at W&J from 1962 to 1964. It was at this time that he fell in love with college teaching. He pursued graduate studies on a full-time basis for the next five years in order to become a college professor. He received a master’s degree in mathematics education in 1965, a master’s in statistics in 1967 and a doctorate in statistics in 1969. All of his graduate work was done at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. At Rutgers, Dr. Romboski received a National Science Foundation academic year scholarship his first year and a one-year grant from NSF. During his last year at Rutgers, he held a full-time faculty position.

In 1969, he became an associate professor at California University of Pennsylvania. His promotion to full professor in the mathematics and computer science department came in 1972. This is the position he held until his retirement in 2002. From 1973 to 1976, Dr. Romboski was the editor of the Journal of Quality Technology, the statistical journal of the American Society for Quality. He was a member of the American Society for Quality, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the American Statistical Association, Mathematical Association of America and Sigma XI, a scientific honor society. He made presentations at regional meetings of MAA, NCTM and ASQ. He also worked on a part-time basis as a statistical consultant and trainer in quality-control methods, experimental design and statistical computer analysis. U.S. Steel, Snap-On-Tools, TAT and DELCO Electronics were among his clients.

In 1975 and again in 1976, he was honored with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Exceptional Academic Service Award. Larry received the CUP Alumni C.B. Wilson Distinguished Faculty Award in 1989. In 1997, he received the university’s Excellence in Teaching Award. At the annual CUP Gala in 2007, he was honored with an Emeriti Faculty Award. He also received the Dixon Award for meritorious service from the Foundation for CUP in 2007.

For many years, Dr. Romboski and wife Joanne were members of the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish leadership team. They enjoyed traveling, attending the Civic Light Opera and going to various musical concerts. They shared a love of gardening and were both certified Master Gardeners. As a team, they delivered Meals On Wheels for several years. In addition, they were avid fans of Cal U. basketball and their beloved Steelers. They were Steelers season-ticket holders. They delighted in their three children, five grandchildren and dear friends who brought great joy into their lives. He especially enjoyed his Tuesday get-togethers at the math department retiree luncheons.

On April 18, 1959, Dr. Romboski married Joanne Kapsi, who survives. They have three children, Joyce (Chris) McKnight of Venetia, Lynn (Chris) Messman of Georgetown, Mass., and Larry Jr. (Rose) of Cranberry Township, and five grandchildren, Michael Messman, Mollourthy Messman, Macy McKnight, Lindsay McKnight and Alexis McKnight. In addition to his parents, deceased is his sister, Jean Hepburn.

Former glassworker was always helping others

Mary Elizabeth LaVelle Slobodgen, 82, of Canonsburg, formerly of Washington, died Tuesday, January 21, 2014, in Consulate Health Care, North Strabane Township, following a lengthy illness.

She was born August 14, 1931, in Washington, a daughter of the late Raymond M. LaVelle and Laura Marie Jones LaVelle.

She was a 1949 graduate of Washington High School.

Mrs. Slobodgen was a homemaker and worked at Metro Glass in Washington for 18 years.

She was a loving and caring person, always helping family and friends. She will be remembered for all the time she spent helping others. She liked to roller skate and enjoyed bowling.

She was married to Joseph Edward Slobodgen, who died January 4, 2005.

Surviving is a son, Lawrence Joseph “Joe” LaVelle of Washington.

Deceased are a son, Michael Slobodgen; two brothers, Raymond W. LaVelle and George Herbert LaVelle; and a stepmother, Irma Romano LaVelle.

Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m., the time of service, Thursday, January 23, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Burial is private.

A service for Howard F. Weller, who died January 20, 2014, has been modified. The memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 25, in Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church, 112 West Pike Street, Canonsburg.
