A standout wrestler and football player at Trinity High School, he attended Taylor University in Upland, Ind., on a football scholarship.

He was head elder and, at the time of his death, elder emeritus. He was active in Rotary Club and, for a time, was president of Peters Township Chamber of Commerce. He volunteered for many years at Washington City Mission, where he also served a term as chairman of the board.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Johns-Guthrie of Van Wert, Ohio, who brought so much joy to his last months. He was loved and will be missed by his two children, Mrs. Shari (Walter) McRae of Richmond, Va., and Dr. Steven (Julie) Guthrie of Nashville, Tenn.
