Area elementary teacher enjoyed family

Alice E. Shapiro, 85, of Washington, died at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, January 26, 2014, in her home, after being seriously ill for the past two weeks.

She was born July 29, 1928, in Claysville, a daughter of the late Louis San and Freda Luella Ross Emeterio. She resided in Claysville for several years, prior to moving to Buffalo Township in 1959, and had resided in Washington since 1991.

Mrs. Shapiro was a 1946 graduate of the former Claysville High School and earned her degree and teaching certification in elementary education from the University of Pittsburgh.

She began her teaching career in the former Blaine-Buffalo Elementary School, and in 1960, was hired by McGuffey School District as a kindergarten teacher in the Claysville Elementary School, where she taught for 31 years, prior to retiring in 1991.

Mrs. Shapiro enjoyed traveling with her grandchildren to Las Vegas, Nev., sometimes twice a year, as long as her health permitted, to visit her brother and to gamble. She also enjoyed cross stitching, playing piano and reading murder mysteries. Her passions in life were teaching and interacting with her great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Washington County and Pennsylvania State Teachers Association and Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.

On December 19, 1959, she married Dr. Alvin Shapiro, D.V.M. (retired), who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Kathryn Sprowls, companion of Margaret Geer of Washington; a nephew, Philip, husband of Sandy Ward of West Alexander, who she raised following the death of her sister; two grandchildren, Laura, wife of Michael Schick of Raleigh, N.C., and Shawn, husband of Maria Janovich of Pittsburgh; three great-grandchildren, Ashley and Eli Janovich and Alicea Schick; a brother, Dr. Louis C., husband of Pat Emeterio of Las Vegas; a nephew, Louis, husband of Linda Emeterio of Claysville; three nieces, Beth Emeterio of Tenn., Amanda, wife of Gregory Blue of West Chester, and Darcy, wife of David Deloach of Dana Point, Calif.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, is a sister, Carolyn Ward.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 1, in West Alexander Presbyterian Church, West Alexander, with the Rev. Keith Hornung officiating. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Claysville Elementary School, Kindergarten Accelerated Reading Program, 119 Main Street, Claysville, PA 15323.
