Purple Heart recipient

Ralph J. Angelini, 87, of Jefferson, formerly of Nemacolin, died Tuesday morning, January 28, 2014, in Consulate Health Care, McMurray.

He was born May 2, 1926, in Nemacolin, a son of the late Frank and Clementine Vitale Angelini.

Mr. Angelini served with Company 1 of the 13th Infantry Regiment with the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe. For his injuries sustained in the line of duty, he was awarded the Purple Heart. Mr. Angelini worked after World War II as a barber in Nemacolin. He later worked as an appliance repairman for Montgomery Ward and Angelini’s Hardware and Appliance in Carmichaels. He later owned and operated Ralph’s Appliance in Carmichaels for a number of years. Mr. Angelini retired from Nemacolin Mine as a union electrician in 1986.

He was a member of the Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church in Nemacolin and United Mine Workers of America Nemacolin Local 6290. Mr. Angelini enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Ryczek Angelini; five sons, Jim Angelini and his wife, Susan, of Washington, David Angelini and his wife, Cherie, of Jefferson, Mark Angelini and his wife, Kathy, of Washington, Gregory Angelini of Jefferson and Martin Angelini and his wife, Stephanie, of McMurray; seven grandchildren, Jimmy Angelini, Justin Angelini, Christie Angelini, Mandi Baney and her husband, David, Mia Angelini, Kristin Stewart and her husband, Greg, and Whitney Angelini; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a brother, August Angelini, and two sisters, Rose Burchianti and Josephine Egidi.

Family and friends are welcome from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Yoskovich Funeral Home, 724-966-5500, Martin J. Yoskovich, funeral director, 300 South Vine Street (Route 88), Carmichaels, where a blessing service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 31, followed at 11 a.m. by a Mass of the Resurrection at St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church, Carmichaels, with the Rev. John M. Bauer as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Crucible, with military honors accorded by Cumberland American Legion Post 400, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491 and the U.S. Army. A vigil service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

Veteran enjoyed fishing and bowling

Karl Edward Evans, 79, of North Franklin Township, went home to be his Lord Tuesday, January 28, 2014, in his home.

He was born July 11, 1934, in Washington, a son of the late Martin Evans and Elizabeth Mastnock Evans.

Mr. Evans was a graduate of Trinity High School and served in the U.S. Army.

He worked for Dick Hughes Plymouth and Beattie Buick, and later became a machinist and worked for IGS. He retired from Dynamet in 1999, where he was a tool and dye maker.

His favorite past time was fishing. He also enjoyed bowling in the senior league at Route 19 Bowl and was on the advisory committee at Washington Community Federal Credit Union.

On July 31, 1965 he married Charlotte E. Wagner, who survives.

Also surviving are his children, Rick (Tiffany) Evans of Westland, Mich., Dave Evans of West Alexander and Sharyn (Howard) Gregg of McMurray; a grandson, Devan of Florida; two sisters, Vi Tustin and Bea Strnisha; two brothers, Harry and Jim; several nieces and nephews, including Jan, who helped care for him; and several cousins.

Friends will be received from 2 to 6 p.m., the time of service, Thursday, January 30, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, with Pastor Rick Bruckner officiating.

Lifelong resident of Muse was active in community

Erma Falcocchio, 87, of Muse, passed away Monday, January 27, 2014, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, with her family by her side.

She was born April 29, 1926, in Black Diamond, Washington County, a daughter of the late Antonio and Clara Fedon Spadoni.

Mrs. Falcocchio was a lifelong resident of Muse, where she was a member of Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and Alter Society. She was a 1944 graduate of Cecil High School and, during World War II, worked in the defense plant making shells for the U.S. Navy Department. For 18 years, she worked at the former Santoni’s and Holman’s in Muse. Prior to her retirement in 1996, she had been employed for 22 years at Sarris Candies in Canonsburg.

Mrs. Falcocchio involved herself in many community activities. For many years, she portrayed Mrs. Clause at various venues to the delight of many children. She was a charter member and past president of Ladies Auxiliary of Muse Volunteer Fire Department No. 2, where she was honored as Mother of the Year in 1989. She was a charter member of Italian Independent Women’s Auxiliary, a member of the former Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Canonsburg 1211, St. Mary’s Hilltoppers of Cecil, GOL, which she hosted in her home the past eight years, and Senior Citizens of Muse. Mrs. Falcocchio volunteered for the Canonsburg Library branch in Cecil, Canonsburg General Hospital Rehabilitation Unit and served many years on the Washington County Board of Elections precinct 5 in Cecil Township.

On November 3, 1946, she married Attilio (Teo) Falcocchio, who passed away February 10, 1995.

Surviving are three daughters, JoAnn Markovich of Bridgeville, Roberta DeJohn of Washington and Karen Macerelli of Collier Township; eight grandchildren, Michelle Markovich, Renee (Mark) Pollack, Julie (Kerry) Vaugh, Jason (Dianna) Markovich, Matthew and Nicole DeJohn, and Karla and Scott Macerelli; four great-grandsons, Rocco and Joshua Markovich, and Levi and Victor Vaughn; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the last of her immediate family.

Deceased, in addition to her husband and parents, are a sister, Margaret Hrabcsak, and a brother, Robert Spadoni.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Salandra Funeral Service Inc., Joseph P. Sara Ann Gavazzi, 71, of Scenery Hill, died Sunday, January 26, 2014.

Enjoyed spending time with grandchildren

William L. Johnson, 66, of Washington, passed away peacefully January 27, 2014.

Born July 29, 1947, he was a son of the late Ruth and Sylvester Johnson.

He was the beloved husband of Tamara Brown Johnson; loving father of Daniel (Christina) Johnson of Washington and Douglas (Jennifer Bell) Johnson; stepfather of April (Tim) Serafini; Pap Pap of Caitlin, Aidan, Natalie and Gavin; brother of Robert (Hilary) Johnson; and uncle of Dale (Margaret) Johnson and Jeremy (Allison) Johnson. Also surviving are several great nieces.

Mr. Johnson loved bass fishing and hunting with his sons. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Bradley Nolan Kersey, 37, of Avella, passed away unexpectedly Monday, January 27, 2014, in Washington Hospital.

Veteran owned E.C. Mark Co.

Edward C. Mark, 91, of Millsboro, died Monday, January 27, 2014, in Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.

He was born September 26, 1922, in West Elizabeth, a son of the late Thomas and Dora Watkins Mark.

Mr. Mark was a 1940 graduate of Carmichaels High School and a 1944 graduate of Waynesburg College.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Mark served with the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. For his service, he was awarded the American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with Two Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with One Star and World War II Victory Medal. He was a 55-year member of the Hancock-McCune-Horne American Legion Post 705, Centerville.

After his discharge, Mr. Mark worked for the Morton family in their concrete business, located in Millsboro, eventually purchasing the business that he owned and operated as E.C. Mark Co., a supplier of home heating fuel and concrete. He retired in 2000.

He was a long-time member of Millsboro Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and treasurer for many years. He was dedicated to operating his business and his church.

Mr. Mark supported local children’s sports and the East Bethlehem Township Volunteer Fire Department. Spending time with his grandchildren brought him special enjoyment.

On July 1, 1944, he married Emily Ann Morton Mark, who died March 24, 2008.

Surviving is a son, Edward C. Mark Jr. (Kathleen) of Hockessin, Del.; three daughters, Patricia M. Watkins (Mark) of Eighty Four, Nancy M. Caprini (Walter) of Millsboro and Emily M. Watkins (Ray) of Guyton, Ga.; six grandchildren, Megan McCartney, Christopher Watkins, Lauren Leathern, Kelly Mark, Heather Halloway and Bryan Watkins; seven great-grandchildren, Mark and Mallory McCartney, Lillian, Emily and Harris Watkins and Hadlee and Camryn Halloway; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents and wife, are three brothers, Thomas, David and Ray Mark.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 31, with the Rev. Enjoyed officiating and coaching baseball

James H. “Ozzie” Osborn, 72, of Washington and Lake Worth, Fla., died January 27, 2014, in Washington Hospital.

He was born May 8, 1941, in Washington, a son of the late Robert F. and Edith P. Osborn.

Mr. Osborn was a 1959 graduate of Washington High School and 1964 graduate of Waynesburg College. He was employed as a caseworker by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare at the Washington County Board of Assistance, retiring in 1994.

He was a member of Avery United Methodist Church.

Mr. Osborn was an active sports enthusiast. He was a well-respected PIAA basketball official, having worked more than 40 years in the sport, and served as president and rules interpreter of the Washington County Basketball Official Association. He was active in local baseball, coaching WYB from 1959 to 1989. He managed the Presco Team in Pony League and won city championships in 1987, 1988 and 1989. He also coached baseball at Trinity High School from 1991 to 2006.

Mr. Osborn was an avid golfer playing in the Washington area in the summer and Lake Worth in the winter. He coached Trinity High School Golf Team from 1998 to 2012.

He was a member of the 630th Transportation Company USAR and served in Vietnam from September 1968 to August 1969. He was stationed at Phu-Bai RVN XXIV Corp.

On July 24, 1985 he married Sherry L. Fullerton, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Stephen D. Osborn of Tampa, Fla.; a brother, Robert W. (Sue) Osborn of Chillicothe, Ohio; a niece, Dr. Jennifer Osborn and husband Dr. Mark Provenzano of Wexford; a nephew, Michael (Katy) Osborn of Springfield, Ohio; great-nieces Alexis Porvenzao and Caroline Osborn; and great-nephews Nicholas, Andrew and Anthony Provenzano and Grant Osborn.

He also leaves behind his beloved cat, Snowball.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 1, with the Rev. Ruth Simmons officiating. Veteran was former New Freeport resident

Franklin Pierce, 83, of Independence, W.Va., formerly of New Freeport, died Saturday, January 25, 2014, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.

He was born January 11, 1931, in New Freeport, a son of the late George Dewey Pierce and Huldah Kathern Warrick Pierce.

Mr. Pierce was retired from Marx Toys in Moundsville, W.Va. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War.

Surviving are two sons, Gary Pierce of Lafargeville, N.Y., and Dewey Pierce of Texas; three daughters, Zelma Gorby of Fayetteville, W.Va., Delores Jean Griffith of Pennsacola, Fla., and DeEtta Pierce of Hundred, W.Va.; a brother, Russell Pierce of New Freeport; three sisters, Lillie May Yoders of New Freeport, Junie Johnson of New Freeport and Rosa Lee Trump of Cleveland, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are his first wife, Ethel Snyder Pierce; his second wife, Vickie Prendergast Pierce; two sisters, Mary DeBolt and Mildred Pierce; and five brothers, George Pierce, Francis Pierce, Charles Pierce, James Pierce and Thomas Lee Pierce.

Worked as a licensed practical nurse

Loretta F. Schartiger, 66, of Dilliner, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014, in her home after a short illness.

She was born September 16, 1947, in Bobtown, a daughter of the late James and Lucille Allum.

Ms. Schartiger was most recently employed at the Wishing Well Nursing Home in Fairmont, W.Va., where she worked as an licensed practical nurse with nearly 30 years of service.

She is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Schartiger and Jessica Hanlan; her sons, Michael Yanak and wife Lynn, and Scott Yanak; grandchildren David, Cori, Kayla, Brandon, Courtney, Chad, Ashlee, Cody and Nathan; four great-grandchildren, Cayden, Collin, Olivia and Avery; a brother, David Allum and wife Thelma of Morgantown; sisters Ellen Lentz of TX, Susie Franks and husband Albert of Bobtown, Betty Jean King and Pam DiCarlo, both of Morgantown, W.Va.; and her extended family, Tina and Keith, Heidi and Patrick, Tracy, Eric, Dana, Danielle, Matt and Jessica.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are her son, James “Jimmy” Yanak, and two brothers, Mark and Butch Allum.

Area elementary teacher enjoyed family

Alice E. Shapiro, 85, of Washington, died at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, January 26, 2014, in her home, after being seriously ill for the past two weeks.

She was born July 29, 1928, in Claysville, a daughter of the late Louis San and Freda Luella Ross Emeterio. She resided in Claysville for several years, prior to moving to Buffalo Township in 1959, and had resided in Washington since 1991.

Mrs. Shapiro was a 1946 graduate of the former Claysville High School and earned her degree and teaching certification in elementary education from the University of Pittsburgh.

She began her teaching career in the former Blaine-Buffalo Elementary School, and in 1960, was hired by McGuffey School District as a kindergarten teacher in the Claysville Elementary School, where she taught for 31 years, prior to retiring in 1991.

Mrs. Shapiro enjoyed traveling with her grandchildren to Las Vegas, Nev., sometimes twice a year, as long as her health permitted, to visit her brother and to gamble. She also enjoyed cross stitching, playing piano and reading murder mysteries. Her passions in life were teaching and interacting with her great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Washington County and Pennsylvania State Teachers Association and Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.

On December 19, 1959, she married Dr. Alvin Shapiro, D.V.M. (retired), who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Kathryn Sprowls, companion of Margaret Geer of Washington; a nephew, Philip, husband of Sandy Ward of West Alexander, who she raised following the death of her sister; two grandchildren, Laura, wife of Michael Schick of Raleigh, N.C., and Shawn, husband of Maria Janovich of Pittsburgh; three great-grandchildren, Ashley and Eli Janovich and Alicea Schick; a brother, Dr. Louis C., husband of Pat Emeterio of Las Vegas; a nephew, Louis, husband of Linda Emeterio of Claysville; three nieces, Beth Emeterio of Tenn., Amanda, wife of Gregory Blue of West Chester, and Darcy, wife of David Deloach of Dana Point, Calif.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, is a sister, Carolyn Ward.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 1, in West Alexander Presbyterian Church, West Alexander, with the Rev. Keith Hornung officiating. Electrician was Fountain of Life member

Lloyd Clark Thomas, 93, of Eighty Four, died Monday, January 27, 2014, in Donnell House.

He was born September 15, 1920, in Littleton, W.Va., a son of the late Clarence Thomas and Peral Fluharty Thomas.

Mr. Thomas was a union electrician for Local 141 in Wheeling and retired from Local 5 in Pittsburgh.

He attended Fountain of Life Church.

On May 12, 1941, he married Leah Mae Roupe, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Donald (Cordelia) Thomas of Greensburg; three brothers, Glen, Ronald and Garald Thomas; five sisters, Pauline Albaugh, Mabel Williams, Wilda Hatfield, Shirley Hoffman and Linda Hempfield; three grandchildren, Heidi Mae Pfister, Gretchen Marie Durkin and Courtney Le Cahill; and six great-grandchildren, Madeline and Leah Pfister, Katherine and Lauren Durkin and Liam and Brennan Cahill.

Deceased are a son, Robert Clark Thomas, who died in 1964 serving in the U.S. Army; a brother, Ralph Thomas; and two sisters, Madeline and Rosalie.

Alice D. Williams, 91, of Buckhannon, W.Va., died Sunday, January 26, 2014.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday with funeral 11 a.m. Saturday, February 1, in Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home, Buckhannon.
