Ohio mechanic, formerly of Avella

Scott A. Smutney, 35, of Bridgeport, Ohio, formerly of Avella, died at 9 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2014, in Washington Hospital, surrounded by family.

He was born January 19, 1979, in Washington Hospital, a son of Paul “Tony” and Susan Olenick Smutney of Avella.

Mr. Smutney was a 1997 graduate of Avella High School and received his associate’s degree in auto mechanics from Rosedale Technical Institute of Pittsburgh.

He was employed by Langeloth Metallurgical Co. LLC as a mechanic for 10 years.

Mr. Smutney enjoyed his dog, Sarah, working on his family farm and his tractors. He lived in Bridgeport since 2010.

On May 22, 2010, he married Pam L. Ferrell, who survives.

Also surviving are his twin children, William Paul Smutney and Eva Rose Smutney; a brother, Matthew Smutney of Avella; a nephew, Christian Smutney; his maternal grandmother, Veronica Olenick of Avella; mother- and father-in-law, William and Barbara Ferrell of Belmont, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Dale Ferrell of Cleveland, Ohio; three great-aunts, Peggy Jean Myers, Julia Kubacka and Susan Sprando; several aunts and uncles; and many cousins.

Deceased are his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Eleen Smutney, and maternal grandfather George Olenick.

Friends and family will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Jerome A. Stefkovich Funeral Home Inc., 18 Campbell Street, Avella, PA 15312, where Panachida will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, followed by Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church – Byzantine Rite, Avella, with Father Edward Lucas officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Avella.
