Genevieve Mae Messer, 92, of Fredericktown, Centerville Borough, passed away Friday, December 8, 2017, in Monongahela Valley Hospital.

She was born March 25, 1925, in Vesta 6, a daughter of the late Frank and Minnie Miller Hanning.

She was a 1943 graduate of Centerville High School.

She and her late husband co-owned and operated the cherished Messer family farm.

Mrs. Messer was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and, at the time of her death, was its oldest living member. During her tenure, she served on administrative council, charge council and the board of trustees. She was an active member and former president of the women’s society and always worked during Pike Days and church dinners. She was also a member of the quilters guild.

She enjoyed gardening, quilting, knitting, bowling, reading and ceramics. She was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Ann Tedesco (John) of Allison Park; a son, John Messer Jr. (Penny) of Richeyville; four grandchildren, Amber Burkett (Paul), Brittney Messer, Philip Tedesco (Kimberly) and Lauren Scheiber (Jim); five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank and Leon Hanning, both of Streetsboro, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are her husband, John Messer Sr., who died October 25, 1986; a grandson, Cody Watkins Messer, who died March 29, 1987; seven brothers, Joseph, Clayton, Glenn, John, Franklin, Ellis and Leon Hanning; and a sister, Bonnie Hanning.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday in John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, where services will held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 11, with the Rev. Gary Gregg officiating. Interment will follow in Westland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
