Larry L. “Herk” Griffith, 80, of Langeloth, passed away after a brief illness Thursday, December 14, 2017, in his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born September 6, 1937, a son of the late Carl and Anna Froats Griffith.
A graduate of Union High School in Burgettstown, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1961 until being honorably discharged as the rank of sergeant E-5 from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1967.
Mr. Griffith worked for J&L Steel in Aliquippa, where he was a seamless tube foreman, before working for Schiavo and Panhandle Foods in Burgettstown as a truck driver. He also worked as a groundskeeper for Miller Golf Center in Hanover Township, until the time of his illness.
He was a life member of Burgettstown Volunteer Fire Department, which he joined in 1957 and served as a captain, member of Bur-Lang Club and board member of Langeloth Community Center and Grandview Cemetery.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and boating at his camps in Pymatuning and Tionesta and, most of all, teaching countless children about the outdoors.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Nancy L. Kennedy Griffith; three children and six grandchildren, Sandy Griffith of Burgettstown and children Joseph and Noah Lindsay, Linda Degenkolb and husband Darryl of Burgettstown and children Craig Degenkolb and wife Katie and Ryan Degenkolb and girlfriend BillieJo Yeater, Michael Griffith and wife Stephanie of Burgettstown and children Kennedy and Hunter Griffith; five great-grandchildren, Isabella, Ava, Jase, Jersey and Karabella; a sister, Arlene Hollaway, wife of the late Homer of Austin, Texas; three brothers, Carl “Bill” Griffith and wife Betty of Beaver, Colby Griffith of Langeloth and Danny Griffith and wife Susan of Langeloth; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from noon to 6 p.m., the time of service, Saturday in Lee & Martin Funeral Home, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown, officiated by the Rev. Tim Pribanic and Burgettstown Volunteer Fire Department. His family would like to invite everyone to a memorial service and luncheon at 1 p.m. Sunday, December 17, in Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6553, 65 Run Street, Slovan.
