Charlotte Sloan Backer, 87, of Canonsburg, passed away Tuesday, October 31, 2017, in Golden LivingCenter.

She was born October 23, 1930, in Michigan, a daughter of Ruben and Winifred Sloan.

On July 19, 1952, she married the love of her life, Roy Backer, who passed in March 2017.

Mrs. Backer attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. She later was employed for several years at Golden LivingCenter in Canonsburg and was in charge of managing a little store.

Mrs. Backer and her husband, Roy, were members of Chartiers Hill United Presbyterian Church, Canonsburg, where they transferred March 21, 1972, from Whitehall United Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Backer and her husband prepared the communion table for years.

Mrs. Backer and her husband, as chemists, were members of American Chemical Society. As members of the society, she and her husband traveled to conferences around the country each year. When they would return from conferences, they would hand out various items from the conferences to their friends in church.

Surviving are two daughters, Joyce Sharon Backer of Maine and Jane Anne Schreiber of Florida, along with two grandchildren.

In the hope she could help others, Mrs. Backer donated her body to Humanity Gifts Registry. A memorial service will be held in her honor at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 13, in Chartiers Hill United Presbyterian Church, Canonsburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Backer’s honor may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
