Walter Lee “Sonny” Smithley, 77, of Dilliner, died Monday, December 25, 2017, in his home.

He was born December 15, 1940, in Dilliner, a son of the late John and Mary Orr Smithley.

Mr. Smithley was a lifelong resident of Dilliner.

On October 21, 1967, he married Linda A. Robinson, who is deceased.

Surviving are three children, Walter L. Smithley Jr. and Heather Smithley, both of Dilliner, and Matthew Smithley (Katherine) of Coraopolis; three grandchildren, Ryan, Trevor and Liliana; and two siblings, Kenneth Smithley and Judith Wade.

Deceased is a brother, John Smithley.

Mr. Smithley served his country in the U.S. Navy in the 1950s and ’60s. He was a sailor on the inaugural mission of the USS Enterprise. He was a member of Point Marion American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was also a proud member of United Mine Workers of America and worked for many years in a small mine near Bobtown. He also worked at Rolling Meadows Nursing Home.

Mr. Smithley enjoyed playing the Pennsylvania lottery and slot machines. He hoped you will play the lottery, or slots, and hit a jackpot.
