H. Richard Davis

H. Richard Davis, 94, of Waynesburg, died at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, December 27, 2017, in Waynesburg Healthcare and Rehabilitation.

He was born Thursday, July 26, 1923, in Waynesburg, a son of the late Harry Davis and Bertha McClelland Davis.

Mr. Davis was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church in Waynesburg, where he served as a trustee and on several committees. He was a member of the former Waynesburg Odd Fellows and was a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4793 of Waynesburg. He was a 50-year member of James Farrell American Legion Post 330 of Waynesburg and Bricklayers Union 9, formerly 11. He was a life member of Rices Landing Boat Club, where he loved spending as much time as he could. He belonged to the 1st Western Style Square Dance Club, attending eight national competitions.

He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army during World War II, as a medic in the infantry. He served both in the European and Pacific Theaters of Operations. The division that Mr. Davis served in fired the last shot of World War II, the 97th Division Infantry, 322 Medical Battalion.

Mr. Davis worked for 41 years as a bricklayer retiring in 1985, having worked for several different contractors.

On February 14, 1943, he married his wife, Thelma Shoup Davis, who died February 17, 2006.

Surviving are a daughter, Mitzi L. (Gerry) Bailey of Prosperity; five grandchildren, Sean (Leonor) Davis, Ryan (Jennifer) Davis, Aryn (Rebekah) Wadadli, Cami (Marty) Ryan and Ariel Bailey; nine great-grandchildren, Sabine Wadadli, Helena Davis, Ana Davis, Elli Davis, Will Davis, Lochlan Davis, Piper Davis, Graham Jenkins and Amelia Jenkins; three sisters, Margaret Conklin of Waynesburg, Jean Lemley of Washington and Patricia Bleakney of Aurora, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a son and a daughter-in-law, William R. and Kathy Davis, and a sister, Helen McCullough.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., Daryl L. Throckmorton, owner/director, 197 North Maiden Street, Waynesburg, PA 15370, where services will be conducted at noon Saturday, December 30, with the Rev. Tim Lindsay officiating. Burial will be in Greene County Memorial Park, Morgan Township. Graveside military rites will be accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars 4793 and James Farrell American Legion Post 330, both of Waynesburg, and representatives of the U.S. Army.
