James H. Thomas, 95, of Pittsburgh, passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2017, in Canterbury Place, Pittsburgh.
He was born August 21, 1922, in Canonsburg, a son of James G. and Edna Walls Thomas.
Mr. Thomas was a graduate of Canonsburg High School.
He was a supervisor for the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., where he worked for over 30 years. Following his retirement, he worked as a courier for Nation Capital Bank, also in Washington D.C.
Mr. Thomas was a member of Ward Memorial A.M.E. Church in Washington D.C., for over 50 years.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two bronze stars, American Theater Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
While on leave from the service in 1945, he married Mary Rowena Sluby, who passed away in January 1984.
Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Thomas of Pittsburgh; two sisters, Betty Anderson of Solon, Ohio, and Alice Thomas of Canonsburg; a brother-in-law, Paul Sluby of Temple Hills, Md.; and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his wife and parents, are a son, Ronald Thomas; a brother, William Thomas; and a sister, Arlene Perkins.
Friends will be received from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Saturday, November 18, in McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
