Lois Mae Fox Leathers

Lois Mae Fox Leathers, 90, of Waynesburg, passed away at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, November 21, 2017.

She was born October 22, 1927, in Mt. Morris, a daughter of Emil W. Fox and Ruth Dille Fox.

As a teenager, she was in charge of turning out the gas street lamps and making sure all curtains were drawn during air raid drills in Mt. Morris during World War II.

She was a 1945 graduate of Mt. Morris High School. After attending Waynesburg College, she moved to Miami, Fla., to work for TWA. As a Naval officer’s wife, she lived in San Diego, Calif., Pensacola, Fla., Virginia Beach, Va., and Washington, D.C.

After raising three boys as a single mother, she graduated from Waynesburg College in 1976 and embarked on a 30-year career as Greene County supervisor for the Area Agency on Aging. She continued her education at California State College and West Virginia University.

She was a patron of the fine arts and instilled that appreciation to her following generations. A longtime, skilled needlecrafter, she also passed on those skills.

A longtime Democrat, she became active as early as the 1936 FDR election. She continued her activism throughout her life.

Surviving are three sons, Ben K. III (Regina) of San Diego, Michael F. (Candi) of Jefferson and Gregory C. (Lynn) of Waynesburg; six grandchildren, Erin Sano, Noah Leathers, Corey Leathers, Carrie Patterson, Minton Leathers and Cole Leathers; eight great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Caden, August and Liam Sano, Ian and Emma Leathers and Clark and Teo Patterson; a nephew, John McDougal; and two nieces, Cindy Shelton and Peggy Smyth. She also leaves the surviving members of the Seven Sisters.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, is a sister, Shirley McDougal.

The caregivers at Personal Care at Evergreen in Waynesburg and Amedisys Hospice provided Ms. Leathers with excellent care.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 9, in Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4793, 445 East Lincoln Street, Waynesburg. Arrangements are entrusted to Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., Daryl L. Throckmorton, owner/director, 197 North Maiden Street, Waynesburg.
