Gayle Carter, 83, of Washington, died Friday, November 10, 2017. She was a resident at Hawthorne Woods Assisted Living, Washington.

She was born April 20, 1934, in Washington, a daughter of the late Joseph Morton and Virginia Rawlings Morton Brehm.

Mrs. Carter was a 1952 graduate of Trinity High School. She went on to study nursing at Washington Hospital School of Nursing, and later received her bachelor’s degree from California State College.

She worked as a registered nurse in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Charleston, W.Va., before becoming a school nurse at Boyce Middle School in Upper St. Clair School District, as well as McGuffey and Peters Township school districts.

On May 14, 1955, in Washington, she married her high school sweetheart, George Dean Carter, who died March 18, 2011. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage that included travel, gardening and the cultivation of hundreds of varieties of daylilies, being avid Steelers fans and attending more of their children’s swim meets than can be counted. Mrs. Carter also continued her nursing skills as a volunteer for Washington Hospital’s Mammogram Center.

Surviving are children Robin Carter (Greg) McCloskey of Peters Township, Janet Carter (Brian) Kelleher of Raleigh, N.C., and Jay Dean (Diana) Carter of Birmingham, Ala.; a sister, Jo Ann (Martin) Lohne of Columbus, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Nathan McCloskey, Lauren Carter Gerogiannis, Ashley McCloskey Wilson, Caitlin Kelleher Meisenbach, MacKenzie McCloskey Scheponik, Brooklyn Kelleher Gerber, Erin Carter Sorrell, Madison Kelleher and Luke McCloskey; and nine great-grandchildren.

Deceased is a grandson, Jesse McCloskey.

Hawthorne Woods and Gateway Hospice provided Mrs. Carter with excellent care and love.

A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 2, in The Bible Chapel, 300 Gallery Road, McMurray, PA 15317. Visitation with the family will follow. Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Directors Inc., Charles R. Piatt, owner/supervisor, and Lawrence K. Donovan, director.
