George R. Coleman Jr.
George R. Coleman Jr., 76, of Canonsburg, died Thursday, April 12, 2018.
He was born March 31, 1942, in Canonsburg, a son of George and Geraldine Alderson Coleman.
He was a 1960 graduate of Canonsburg High School.
He was Presbyterian and a member of Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Coleman was a sergeant in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country as an airborne ranger.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge 45, Syria Shriners Pittsburgh Lodge, Scottish Rite of Washington-Greene County, Canonsburg Volunteer Fire Department and Pennsylvania State Firemen’s Association, where he served as state chaplain for many years.
Mr. Coleman was very active in his community. He served on Canonsburg Council for many years and was active with many other social and civic organizations. He was a 2012 inductee of Washington-Greene County Chapter of Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame for his boxing.
Prior to his retirement, he worked as hospital safety manager at Mayview State Hospital.
Surviving are his sons, George R. Coleman III and wife Tess and Shawn P. Coleman and fiancée Vicki Charlton, all of Canonsburg; a brother, Harold “Buddy” Coleman and wife Fran of Canonsburg; three grandchildren, Shane Coleman, Krysten Coleman and Melissa (Sam) Lombardo; two great-grandchildren, Raelin Coleman and Gwynneth Lombardo; a niece, Jamie Coleman; a nephew, Jim Coleman; and a great-niece, Sydnee Price.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, is his wife, Darlene J. Hampson Coleman, who died December 4, 2007.
Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the time of service, Saturday, April 14, in Sollon Funeral and Cremation Services Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, Phillip L. Sollon, supervisor, J. David Sollon, director, 724-746-1000, with the Rev. Parkhill, the Rev. Yohe and the Rev. Fischer celebrating. Burial will be private. Fireman services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
