Charles I. Christopher
Charles I. “Sonny” “Chuck” Christopher, 88, of Waynesburg, died Monday, August 6, 2018.
He was born September 2, 1929, in Rices Landing, a son of the late William and Sadie Murray Christopher.
Chuck served in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers, 1st Calvary Division, from September 20, 1950, to September 22, 1954. Overseas, he served in Korea and Japan.
On July 31, 1951, he married Sara Louise Reay in Winchester, Va. Sara passed away May 9, 2017.
He grew up in Rices Landing, then moved with his wife to Camp Picket, Va., where their first son, Charles, was born. They then moved to Akron, Ohio, where their second son, Robert, was born. Later, they moved to Waynesburg, where their daughter, Susan, was born.
Chuck was a lock and dam operator with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and retired in 1989.
He was a life member of American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of the Citizens Club, Slavonic Club, Athletic Club and the Moose Lodge.
Surviving are three children, Charles Irvin Christopher Jr. and wife Sammi of Taylorstown, Robert Henry Christopher and wife Linda of Fort Washington, Md., and Susan Louise Christopher of Waynesburg; four grandchildren, Jennie Lee Christopher, Jason Bryant Christopher (Becky), Erin Marie Christopher and Robert Patrick Christopher; three great-grandchildren, Lucas Christopher Minnick, Zoey Anne Christopher and Alexandria Elizabeth Menke; and brother Ivan Eugene (Joanne) Christopher of Finleyville.
Deceased are siblings Mabel Marie Christopher Nicholson, William Leonard “Fat” Christopher, Henry Newton “Newt” Christopher, Naomi Genevieve Christopher Metzler, Aldon Stiers “Perry” Christopher, Loma Bess Christopher Dowlin, Retha Rose Christopher Simmons, Hannah Jane Christopher (twin died in infancy) and an unnamed boy (twin died at birth).
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 12, in Jefferson United Methodist Church, 190 Washington Street, Jefferson, with the Rev. Richard Bowser officiating. Following the memorial service will be a luncheon in Jefferson Community Center. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Jefferson United Methodist Church.
