George Maropis

George Maropis, 91, of Parma, Ohio, formerly of Langeloth, passed away Saturday, November 17, 2018, due to complications following a fall in his home.

George was born March 27, 1927, in Langeloth, one of seven children of Speros and Argero Maropis.

He attended Langeloth Grade School and was a 1945 graduate of Union High School in Burgettstown, where he excelled scholastically, as an athlete and as class president for four years.

In March 1945, George, after satisfying graduation requirements and along with several of his classmates, joined the military and served in the North Atlantic aboard the USCG Cutter Narcissus, which had been outfitted with mine-sweeping capabilities. Following the end of World War II, George was issued an early honorable discharge and subsequently earned a degree in physics from Cleveland State University.

In November 1949, he married Helen Harriston of Cleveland, and they are the parents of Dr. Hope (Dr. Michael) Barkoukis of Brecksville, Ohio, and Sam (Ruth) of San Antonio, Texas. They are the grandparents of five loving grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. George is also survived by three siblings, Freida (Frank) Sprando of Langeloth, Pete (Marguerite) of Burgettstown and Pat (Despina) of North Fayette Township.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Angelo, Nick and Chris.

Services were held Saturday, November 24.
