Stanley R. “Mr. Stan,” “Stush,” “Bob” Yopek Jr., 77, of Washington, formerly of Library and Finleyville, died Saturday, December 22, 2018, in Hawthorne Woods Assisted Living, South Strabane Township, following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born July 29, 1941, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Stanley R. and Mary Bilowich Yopek.

Mr. Yopek was a 1959 graduate of Snowden High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War as a medic, before being honorably discharged from active duty in September 1964.

Mr. Yopek was a member of Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church, Washington.

He was employed as a coal miner at Mathies Mine, which later became Mon View Mining, from where he retired after 25 years of employment.

Mr. Yopek was a member of Polish Club, Pulaski Club and American Legion Post 902, Houston. He was a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 664, Library, and Alpine Club.

He enjoyed playing the lotto, planting flowers and gardening. He also enjoyed spending time at Washington Senior Citizens Center, where he made many dear friends over the years. Mr. Yopek was a very patriotic man and was a big proponent for veterans. He loved the American flag and what it stood for. He will be dearly missed.

On January 1, 1960, he married Margaret “Peg” Bretschneider, who survives and resides in Finleyville.

Also surviving are a son, Michael R. (Mary Colombo) Yopek of Canonsburg; a daughter, Michelle Carole Jones of Finleyville; a brother, Albert M. (Rebecca “Becky”) Yopek of Arizona; a granddaughter, Alexis Jones of Ohio; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a son, who died at birth, and a sister, Antoinette Borden.

Gateway Hospice Group of Washington and the entire staff at Hawthorne Woods provided excellent care and overwhelming love and support to Mr. Yopek throughout his illness over the past number of months. Their care and compassion will never be forgotten.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Warco-Falvo Funeral Home Inc., corner of Wilson and East Katherine avenues, Washington, S. Timothy Warco, supervisor/director, Susan Falvo Warco, director, S. Timothy Warco II, director where a departing prayer service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, December 27. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. in Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church, Hewitt Avenue, Washington, with Father Mark Swoger as celebrant. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township, with full military rites accorded by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 and the U.S. Air Force.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church, 605 Hewitt Avenue, Washington, PA 15301, or to Legacies Alive, 10 Carriage Trade Lane, Washington, PA 15301.
