Clyde Anthony Sutherland, 89, of Monongahela, died Wednesday, December 26, 2018, in Mon Valley Care Center.
He was born June 24, 1929, in Monessen, a son of Joseph and Florence Schuller Sutherland.
Clyde was a graduate of Monongahela High School, Class of 1948 and a Korean War veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He retired as a maintenance welder from US Steel Irvin Works in Dravosburg after 25 years of employment.
His memberships include St. Damien of Molokai Church, the Carroll Legion James C. Ford Post 949 of Dunkirk and Victory Hill Gun Club. Clyde enjoyed trap shooting, woodworking and going to the casinos. Most of all, he loved hunting and fishing at “Camp Monongahela” in Emporium, where he was one of the original members.
He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Walters Sutherland, with whom he celebrated 67 years of marriage February 24; two sons, Gery Sutherland and wife Janice and Scott Sutherland and wife Patricia and daughter-in-law Vicki Sutherland, all of Monongahela; six grandchildren, Gery Sutherland Jr. and wife Veronica, Heather Popich and husband Andrew, Cory Sutherland, Tracy Benney and husband Aaron, Thomas and Carl Sutherland; eight great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Herbert “Hobie” Koehler of Mount Pleasant; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, deceased are his son, Mark Sutherland, who died October 6, 2016; brother, Francis Sutherland; and sister, Phyllis Koehler.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 29, in St. Damien of Molokai Church, Monongahela, with the Rev. Patrick Barkey as celebrant. Committal services and interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery with military honors accorded by Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad.
