Albert A. “Toupe” Martin Jr., 69, of Treasure Lake, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 9, 2018, in his home with his beloved wife by his side.

Mr. Martin was born October 27, 1949, in Washington County, to the late Albert Anthony Martin Sr. and Mary Geraldine Spin Martin.

Al was a 1967 graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School.

Al married his beautiful wife and soul mate, Mary Jane Olson-DeJohn, on September 2, 1989. The two were a match made in heaven and inseparable enjoying each other’s company beyond compare. Mary survives and resides in Treasure Lake.

Mr. Martin was a Vietnam veteran who, after faithful and honorable service to his country, was employed by Owens Illinois, where he remained for 47 years, retiring in 2016. Al, through hard work, dedication and perseverance, rose through the ranks to senior plant manager – an extraordinary accomplishment fraught with long hours, sleepless nights and seemingly insurmountable challenges. Nonetheless, Al loved his work and was the consummate professional who lived and breathed OI. It was more than “just a job”, it was a way of life … it was his life.

During his tenure at OI, Al together with his wife, through transfers with the company, lived in Ohio, Montreal, Quebec, Michigan and Toronto. They forged their life together enjoying every precious moment living in new and exciting places they called home.

Al was the sort who loved keeping physically active; particularly playing golf. As such, he was the president of Treasure Lake Golf Association, playing as often as he could with the “Over-The-Hill-Gang”, a close-knit group of buddies rivaled by few.

He also enjoyed sports. Besides being a die-hard Steelers and Pirates fan, he held a fondness for horse and dog racing.

Above all, Al was a very special kind of man. He was the kind of man who could balance his love and dedication of career with unwavering devotion to family. Albert was a family man full of humility, love and kindness possessing an unmatched love for his wife, his children and his grandchildren. He was an amazing person with an incredible spirit and zest for life who will be sorely missed by his family and his many, many friends.

In addition to his best friend, soul mate and spouse, Mary, surviving are three children, Brooke Shumaker and husband Robb of Punxsutawney, Brandon DeJohn of Columbus, Ohio, and Anthony Martin of DuBois. He is also survived by his two very special grandchildren whom he loved tremendously, Isabella DeJohn and Alex Shumaker. Al is the last surviving member of his immediate family and was preceded in death by both of his parents.

Friends were received December 11 in Shumaker Funeral Home Inc., Big Run. A private family funeral was held. Mr. Martin will be interred at Morningside Cemetery, DuBois.
