Tim Nettles, who died Friday, February 16, 2018, is survived by his wife of 39 years, Diane; his older son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Sarah Nettles; his younger son, Tom Nettles; his parents, Don and Helen Nettles; his sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Marty Miller; his most precious granddaughter, Charlotte Rose Nettles; as well as many, many family members and friends here and far away.
He loved more than anything else to watch his sons, Tom and Chuck, play golf in their college and amateur tournaments, and proudly proclaimed they play far better than he ever did. He traveled to tournaments all over the country to be with them on the golf course, even when spectator carts were not allowed and he had to walk 54 holes of golf in two days. He was most proud of the fine young men both of his sons have become.
His daughter-in-law, Sarah, held a special place in his heart. She had a way of acknowledging his greatness while also keeping him grounded and making him smile.
In the past 21 months, his very favorite pastime has been playing with his granddaughter Charlotte, who had a sparkle in her eye every time she saw him. They shared laughs, songs and an occasional forbidden potato chip. Charlotte loves her “Pap-Pap,” and they had a special bond. He kept hundreds of photos and videos of her close by, and whenever he traveled, he often took out his phone to revisit them, smile and share all 1,650 of them with others.
When people describe him, the first word they use is “generous.” He was compassionate about “doing the right thing,” and shared his experiences, wisdom, organizational skills and strength with everyone he knew. His stories sometimes became what his family called “Tim-isms,” in that they became larger than life, but they certainly made people smile.
He was vice president and general manager of Enterprise Holdings of Pittsburgh. He began his career at Enterprise Rent-a-Car in 1978 in Tampa, Fla., where he quickly rose to fleet management manager. In 1986, he sought out the opportunity to open the Baltimore office as vice president/general manager. Then in 1989, he opened the Pittsburgh office, leading his teams to operate 70 locations in Western Pennsylvania with 650 employees. He retired in 2014, and thoroughly enjoyed spending more time with his family, traveling with his wife Diane, doing charity work, working crossword puzzles, clipping coupons, shopping, listening to his favorite music from Chicago and Three Dog Night and managing a busy household.
He was an honorary emeritus board member of Urban League of Pittsburgh, a current board member of Washington County United Way, a dedicated and former member of Pirate Alumni Association and a friend of the Holy Family Institute. He was also very involved with Western Pennsylvania Golf Association, where he served on the executive committee from 2011 to 2017. While he served on several committees for WPGA, he was most passionate about the scholarship fund, which provides college scholarships for young people who work at local golf clubs. He has always been an all-around good guy, but in the past couple of years that became official, as he was invited by Jim O’Brien to join the “Good Old Guys” group. He was a dedicated member, sharing lunch, laughs and memories with many local retired sports personalities.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to WPGA Scholarship Fund, 930 North Lincoln Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15233.
