Barbara Ann Boyd Rankin

Barbara Ann Boyd Rankin, widow of the late Rev. Dr. John Rankin, died February 15, 2018.

She was the only child of Dr. John Boyd and Rachel Stevenson Boyd of New Wilmington.

Surviving are four children, Rachel VanDerStuyf of New York, Elizabeth Rankin of Maine, John Rankin III of Georgia and Rebecca Smiley of Pennsylvania, and five grandchildren, Keaton, Carson, Tommy, Finn and Josie.

Mrs. Rankin was an active member and volunteer in the Presbyterian churches and surrounding communities, in which her husband served. She was an ordained deacon, a Sunday school and vacation Bible school teacher and a volunteer coordinator. She worked with her husband in planning and leading youth fellowship and young adult programs. At Roscoe Presbyterian Church, she coordinated an effort to give needed supplies to Washington Women’s Shelter and was a member of the church’s Janet Ray Circle.

She was a volunteer for California Area Public Library and helped coordinate the library’s first auction to raise money for the railroad station library in 1975. She received a commendation from the Presbyterian Church for her dedication to this effort. She also volunteered for The Center in The Woods as a Meals-on-Wheels driver/runner and later at the facility as a receptionist in administration and as a tour guide during itsOak Festival.

Mrs. Rankin was elected to two terms on California Area School Board and was instrumental in the negotiations and resolution of the divisive school district strike.

She graduated from New Wilmington Area High School, attended Muskingham College and later graduated from California State College. She earned a degree in business and commercial writing and then was a freelance journalist. She wrote for the Tribune Review and wrote news releases for Presbyterian churches and nonprofit groups.

Mrs. Rankin enjoyed walking and was an avid rug hooker. Two of her original designs were featured in the Association of Traditional Rug Hooking Artists Quarterly.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 17, in First Presbyterian Church, California.

Memorial contributions may be made to Center in The Woods in California, California Public Library and California or Roscoe Presbyterian churches.
