John R. Williams Sr., 78, of Washington, went home to be with his Lord Monday, February 26, 2018, in Concordia Hospice of Washington, Donnell House.

He was born February 22, 1940, in Washington, a son of the late Wendell Warren and Winzella Elizabeth Minnie Williams.

Mr. Williams was raised in John Wesley M.E. Church, now United Methodist Church, and remained a member until his death.

He loved life and had many interests and hobbies. He was an avid golfer with his buddies and a renowned artist in Washington who won art competitions, most recently, the blue ribbon at the Washington County Fair in 2017. He also enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. He loved sports and movies and was an accomplished bowler, winning many tournaments. He also loved repairing his tractor and lawn mower and pitching horseshoes.

Mr. Williams learned many things from his father, especially interior and exterior decorating. He became a Realtor and was known as a savvy businessman. He accomplished a lot in his lifetime, which made his family very proud of him.

He dearly loved his wife, Donna McPherson Williams, whom he married December 20, 1994. She died December 10, 2017.

Mr. Williams loved his immediate family and friends and loved making everyone happy in many ways. He loved the Lord and prayed for everyone, leaving himself for last. He just took one day at a time and fought his battle quietly with strength, determination and grace. Many years ago, he had to walk up and down many steps to carry his brother to the hospital; now they will be together again. This is his stairway to heaven: “John is in the loving arms of Jesus.”

Surviving are two sisters, Betty Williams Hughes and Gloria Williams Bates; two children, John (Monica) Williams Jr. and Rhee Renae Ellis; Donna’s children; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins; and a host of friends.

Deceased, in addition to his wife and parents, are a brother, Wendell Warren Williams Jr.; a niece; nephews; grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, George Harvey Bates.

Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, were in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to John Wesley United Methodist Church, 35 Central Avenue, Washington, PA 15301.
