Darryl Zane Aebi, best known to his friends as Zane and family as Pappy, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 24, 2018, with family by his side.

He was born October 28, 1933.

Mr. Aebi was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Frances Jane Burton Aebi; his parents, Madeline Stipes and Jerry Aebi; his brothers, Benjamin (Doris) Aebi and Louis Allen Aebi; and his beloved daughter, Kimberly Dot Aebi Himes.

Surviving are his friend, Nancy Anderson; his brother, Dr. Charles (Imogene) Aebi; his children Zana, Jeffrey (Fae Jones) and Kurt (Karen) Aebi; grandchildren, Dani (Josh) Martell, Thomas and Elizabeth Aebi, Diana and Rayna Himes; great-granddaughter Aebigail Martell; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Aebi was a longtime resident of Southwest Greensburg, where he touched many lives sharing his time and skills. He was always willing to let the kids help with building and creative projects, house and car repairs, and even window and door installation, so they’d learn.

He was one of the original crew working to organize the Southwest Greensburg Recreation Board. He coached baseball and was an umpire for many years as his children grew. He was a man of many talents, working a farm, training border collies, running a dairy farm, working first in the steel mill and later at Kennametal Inc., where he earned his journeyman’s papers in machine repair while raising strong, independent children.

He was a longtime member of Bushy Run Lions Club. His favorite part was the chicken barbecue. It became a family affair over the years, as he was always recruiting his sons, daughters and even his grandchildren to help turn the chickens.

After retiring, Mr. Aebi loved to stay busy. He spent as much time as he could at his second home in Greene County (“the Cave”) where he was able to be the outdoorsman he was born to be. He had his favorite border collie, his garden, a deer feeder, bee hives, mountains and streams, his fellow hunters and and heated garage for tinkering. That was his happy place.

He was loved by all who knew him and will be sorely missed.

The caregivers at Bayada Home/Health and Hospice made his last year in Vermont with family happy and comfortable.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in Leo M. Bacha Funeral Home Inc., 516 Stanton Street, Greensburg, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3, with Pastor Chris Whitehead officiating. Private interment will be in Highland Cemetery, California. www.bachafh.com
