His first teaching position was in Slippery Rock and soon obtained a teaching position at Bethlehem-Center School District, where he taught industrial arts and photography for 32 years. During his tenure at Bethlehem-Center, he held several positions of teacher, athletic director and baseball coach. After his retirement in 1992, he served 10 years on the Bethlehem-Center School Board, where he held the position of secretary and board president.

Mr. Sloan was a member of Hanson-Cole American Legion Post 391 of Fredericktown, a past master and 50-year member of Beallsville Lodge 237 F&AM and executive director of the Bethlehem-Center Community Education Foundation, which he founded in 1996.

He was a loyal fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he worked as a scouting director and signed several local players. He was an avid and loyal Pittsburgh Steelers fan; he rarely missed a game with his close friend Bill Rohland.

He is survived by a daughter, Beth Ann; son-in-law, caretaker and buddy Mario LaBrasca; grandchildren Brandt Michael and wife Kelly and Brooke Elizabeth; son Scott and daughter-in-law Stephanie Sloan; three granddaughters, Evelyn, Chloe and Lillian; a sister, Bonnie Cott; brother-in-law John of Beaver; and several cherished nieces and nephews.
