Lester L. Barney, 88, of Washington, died unexpectedly Wednesday, January 24, 2018, in his home.

He was born June 13, 1929, in Hickory, a son of the late Archibald Milligan and Edith Mae Barney.

A graduate of Hickory High School, he was a member of Avery United Methodist Church.

Mr. Barney was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was retired from Koppers Chemical Co. where he worked as a truck driver.

Mr. Barney loved taking care of his wife, and he spent most of his time with her. He also enjoyed taking walks, and in earlier years, playing golf.

His wife, Doris Mae Barney, also died January 24, 2018. They had just celebrated 66 years of marriage in August.

Surviving are three children, Deborah D. (Russ) Riffle of McClellandtown, Jerry L. Barney of Orrville, Ohio, and Bonnie Sue Young of North Palm Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren, Dena Weimer, Dori Bowlen, Darci Griffith, Branden Barney and Angela Shetler; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are several siblings.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public services.
