Vernon S. “8 Ball” Cook Sr., 91, of Canton Township, passed away Friday, January 26, 2018, in his home.
He was born October 2, 1926, in New Freeport, a son of the late Ray and Pearl Reeves Cook.
Mr. Cook served in the U.S. Army Air Forces from June 24, 1944, until November 9, 1946, when he was honorably discharged at the rank of corporal. He was stationed in Alaska as a B-29 airplane engine mechanic.
He was a member of Big Run Christian Church, Cameron, W.Va.
Mr. Cook enjoyed fishing, camping, collecting John Wayne memorabilia and sitting on his front porch, watching the world go by.
On April 14, 1949, he married Ramona Neely, who passed away December 4, 2005.
Surviving are a daughter, Marsha (Kenneth) Leonard of Washington; a son, Raymond (Sandy) Cook of Amity; eight grandchildren, Kenneth Leonard, Jackie Spicer, Kristi Ruse, Tina Huffman, Vernon Cook III, Jenny Conway, Noel Crowe and Raymond Cook Jr.; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He also had countless “adopted” children and grandchildren of Washington’s West End.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a son, Vernon Cook Jr.; a daughter, Roberta “Lynn” DiLoreto; a brother, Gerald Cook; a sister, Frances Cook Riggs; and a great-grandchild.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 31, with Pastor Gary Whipkey officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, Peters Township.
