Richard Lee Brookes
Richard Lee “Dick” Brookes, 81, the beloved husband of Jean Brookes, died Sunday, July 15, 2018, in Sumter (S.C.) Health and Rehabilitation.
Dick was born March 6, 1937, in Morgantown, W.Va., a son of the late James Allen Brookes and Hillis Clark Brookes.
Dick served during the Vietnam War era as a member of the U.S. Army. He later served as a radio announcer for the Sumter P15 baseball program, Wilson Hall football and several other high schools in the Sumter area.
He was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates and South Carolina Gamecocks fan. He will be remembered as a very loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, Jean, are two sons, Richard Lee Brookes Jr. of Carlisle and James A. Brookes II and wife Michele of Waynesboro; a daughter, Samantha Brookes of Carlisle; six grandchildren, Johnathan Brookes, Nora Brookes, Samuel Keller, Ethan Brookes, Katlyn Stitley and Samantha Dougherty; three stepchildren, Rodney Spertzel and wife Penny of New Cumberland, Julie Manning of Marysville and Susan Warter and husband Michael of Leesburg, Va.; and seven stepgrandchildren, Courtney Spertzel, Samantha Spertzel, Sarah Manning, Hunter Manning, Cameron Warter, Meredith Warter and Jillian Warter.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Thursday in Bullock Funeral Home chapel, 1190 Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Chuck Staggs officiating. Interment will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, July 23, in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
