John Yunko Poroda Sr., 80, of Monongahela, died Saturday, July 21, 2018, in UPMC-Presbyterian hospital, Pittsburgh.
Born February 18, 1938, in Monongahela, he was a son of the late William Sr. and Magdaline Halaszynski Poroda.
A 1957 graduate of Monongahela High School, John retired in 2000 after working for 45 years as an electrician for U.S. Steel’s Clairton mill.
A member of St. Damien of Molokai Parish in Monongahela, he enjoyed spending his free time doing woodworking projects, most of the time giving them away to his friends. An avid golfer, he always looked forward to golfing in the Wednesday and Friday leagues.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Sandra Drotos Poroda, whom he married April 12, 1960; two sons, John “Yunko” Jr. and wife Cathy Poroda of Fellsburg and Jay Poroda (Jay Trainer) of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Jamie Divelbliss of Washington and Toni Poroda (Lisa Burbey) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his mother-in-law, Jean Paradise of Webster.
Also surviving are his beloved pets, dog Bam Bam and cat Tarot.
Preceding him in death are three brothers, Alex, Edward and William Poroda Jr.; three sisters, Mary Franks, Eleanor Gatto and Theresa Poroda, who died in infancy; and a great-granddaughter, Tessa Lee Divelbliss.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in Marshall Marra Funeral Home, 216 Chess Street, Monongahela, 724-258-6767, marshallmarrafuneralhome.com, where services will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, with his nephew, Deacon Alex Poroda, officiating. Interment in Sacred Heart Cemetery will be private, at the family’s request.
