Sarah Louise Gwynn Rhodes
Sarah Louise Gwynn Rhodes, 87, of Carmichaels, died at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2018, in Rolling Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation, Waynesburg.
She was born March 10, 1931, in Boquet, a daughter of the late Franklin Rinehart and Ruth Elizabeth Eckert Gwynn.
Mrs. Rhodes was married to the late Roy Frederick Rhodes for 36 years. She met her husband at a spring dance in May 1948 during her junior year at the former Penn Township High School. Roy’s first wife and two of his four children were tragically killed in an automobile accident in 1946. Rather than completing her high school education, Sarah married Roy August 3,1948, as she wanted to be a wife and mother to his two young sons. She later obtained her General Equivalency Diploma.
Sarah had quite a generous heart. She was always concerned about friends, family members and neighbors. Sarah helped in whatever way she could for those less fortunate than she.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Carmichaels, since moving to the town in 1971. Sarah also was a member of United Methodist Women. In her younger years, she had been a member of the Junior Women’s Club, New Stanton, and Scottdale Grange. Sarah was a den mother for the Ruffs Dale Chapter of Boy Scouts of America. Later, she became a member of Rebekah’s Lodge, Greene County.
Sarah was an avid reader. She wrote poetry and enjoyed embroidering and hand sewing. She helped her husband with farming for many years.
Sarah is survived by her children, Clark Rhodes (fiancée Victoria Reyes) of Willets, Calif., Paul Rhodes (Tracey) of Carmichaels, Daniel Rhodes (Anita) of Aliquippa, Linda Rhodes Smith (Jonathan) of Bridgeport, W.Va., and Ruth Rhodes Benton (Philip) of Hartville, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Linda Anderson Colvig (Robert) of Willets, Laura Smith Lenk (Aaron) of Carnegie, Jeremy Smith (Autumn) of New Stanton, Shawn DeWitt of Seattle, Wash., Zephyr and Nash Benton of Hartville, Ohio, Rochelle, Rachel and Reyna Rhodes of Aliquippa and Alicia Yeager (Justin) of Carmichaels; seven great-grandchildren, Mary and Michael Colvig of Willets, Mathew Colvig of Ypsilanti, Mich., Bastian Edward and Lydia Grey Lenk of Carnegie and Marissa and Haylee Yeager of Carmichaels; her only sibling, Frank E.
