Andrew J. “Andy” Grimes, 88, of Vestaburg, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2018, in Premier Washington Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Chartiers Township.

He was born May 28, 1929, in Crescent Heights, a son of the late Ralph and Anne Svec Grimes.

Mr. Grimes was a 1947 graduate of California High School.

He served in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division in Panama, taking part in the Manhattan Project.

Mr. Grimes was employed by J&L Steel, South Side Works, as a bricklayer for 10 years, Shanopin Mine/Gateway Mine as a coal miner for 20 years and Ross Mould in Washington as an inspector for six years.

Andrew was a lifelong member of St. Katharine Drexel Parish, Fredericktown campus, American Legion Post 395, Fredericktown, and an active member of United Mine Workers of America, United Steelworkers of America and AFAWA Flint.

He loved Harley-Davidsons, hunting, fishing and adored his grandchildren. He also enjoyed boxing while he was in the Army.

On January 9, 1954, he married Delores J. Pordash, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Larry Grimes (Marlene) of Carmichaels and Patrick Grimes (Paula) of Vestaburg; a daughter, Valerie Orlandi (Tony) of Vestaburg; a brother, Russell Grimes (Judy) of Niles, Ohio; a sister, Irma Mori of Latrobe; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two sons, Ricky and Davey Grimes, and a sister, Ellen Greely.

Friends will be received from 3 to 6 p.m., the time of a prayer service, Monday, May 7, in Greenlee Funeral Home, 42 Bank Street, Fredericktown, with the Rev. Edward L. Yuhas officiating. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 395, Fredericktown. Interment will be private.
