Helen Berestecky Applegate, 91, of Donora, died Wednesday, May 23, 2018, in Mon Valley Care Center, Carroll Township.
Born May 13, 1927, in Donora, she was a daughter of Michael and Martha Gresh Berestecky.
She retired in 2000 after working 27 years in the dietary department at Monongahela Valley Hospital.
Helen graduated from the former Donora High School in 1945 and was a member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, Donora.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, R. Barry and Eugena Applegate of Monongahela (Carroll Township) and Randal and Barbara Applegate of Lewis Center, Ohio; six grandchildren, Lisa (Henry) Fonzi, Leslie (Michael) Johnston, Kristen (Brian) Loehlein, Benjamin and Patrick Applegate and Sodiq Khidirov (Farangiz); three great-granddaughters, twins Hadley and Kendall Fonzi and Sabria Khidirov; along with many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Ralph H. Applegate, who died January 17, 1985; six brothers, Stephen, Metro, Charles, John, Michael and Andrew Berestecky; and a sister, Ann Fertall.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Marshall Marra Funeral Home, 216 Chess Street, Monongahela, 724-258-6767, where a Panachida service will begin at 9:15 a.m. Monday, May 28, followed at 10 a.m. by a Divine Liturgy in St. Michael’s Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, 511 Murray Avenue, Donora, with Fr. Stephen Wahal officiating. Interment will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Donora.
