Marilyn Joann Snode Conte, 86, of Washington, formerly of Sarahsville, Ohio, Caldwell, Ohio, and Clairton, died Saturday, May 26, 2018, in Strabane Woods, South Strabane Township.
She was born June 2, 1931, in Zanesville, Ohio, a daughter of G. Herman and Thelma Ruth Young Snode.
Marilyn was a 1949 graduate of Clairton High School and earned her bachelor of science degree in psychology from University of Pittsburgh.
She and husband Frank moved to Washington in the late 1950s and remained there the rest of their lives. In Washington, she joined the Welcome Wagon, made many lifelong friends and became an enthusiastic community volunteer. Her thirst for knowledge never deserted her. A love for art and color led to classes in medieval, Italian and non-Western art at Pitt. She and Frank collected the work of regional artists, as well as those discovered during their travels. She was a voracious reader whose interests ranged from earth science to classic mysteries to Far Side cartoons. She was also an outstanding gardener with a broad knowledge of plants and a tireless seamstress who created Halloween costumes for her children and patchwork quilts for her grandchildren. Her high school aspiration to become the first woman in space was not realized, but she was always ready for adventure.
Marilyn is survived by a daughter, Johanna Conte of Wyoming, Ohio; two sons, Christopher Conte and wife Sabine Barcatta of Logan, Utah, and Jonathan Conte and wife Mary Louise Lyons Conte of Loveland, Ohio; and six grandchildren, Alexandra Mieczkowski, Steven Mieczkowski and wife Mae Safi and Marcus, Cameron, Ethan and Adrian Conte.
She was supported during her final years by her kind neighbors on Green Crescent Drive, the caring staff at Strabane Woods and wonderful friends, most notably Joyce Blackburn.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Anthony Conte, who died November 30, 2013.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 1. Interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Reach Out and Read, 56 Roland Street, Suite 100D, Boston, MA 02129, or at www.reachoutandread.org, a nonprofit organization committed to preparing America’s children to succeed in school.
