Walter L. Sykes, 102, of Valencia, formerly of Canonsburg and Gibsonia, died Wednesday, October 17, 2018.

Walter was born January 13, 1916, in McKeesport, the third son of Roy C. and Cora M. Finney Sykes. A graduate of Trinity High School, he spent most of his adult life in Canonsburg and was dedicated to his family, church, occupation at Fort Pitt Bridge Works and to Lodge 297 Free and Accepted Masons, where he was an 81-year, 33rd degree member. Among his leadership activities in the lodge, he served as District Deputy Grand Master for 10 years. His years on the Board of the Masonic Homes were among the most important to him.

A member of Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church and previously a member of First Presbyterian Church of Canonsburg, he served 60 years as an elder. In addition, he served as clerk of session and treasurer of the Sunday school. In 1991, he served as moderator of Washington Presbytery.

Walter was valued for his kindness, generosity, integrity and bad puns.

Walter was preceded in death by Sara, his wife of 60 years; his granddaughter, Catherine Sykes; and siblings Charles, Howard, June Higgins and Thelma Lane.

He is survived by his son, Robert G. Sykes (Susan); his caring and loving wife, Lois Kleber-Sykes; brother Ralph W. Sykes; Lois’s daughters, Mary Louise Peters and Karen Carey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be welcomed from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Beinhauer Funeral Home, 164 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-5810. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 24, in Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church. Lunch will follow in the church dining hall. Private interment will follow.
