Stella Pezzino, 86, of Speers, Charleroi, passed away peacefully Monday, September 3, 2018, in her home, surrounded by family.
She was born in Blue Diamond, Ky., a daughter of the late Pete and Eudoxia Doolas.
She was a 1951 graduate of Charleroi Area High School and went on to become a certified beautician.
Stella was a faithful Orthodox Christian and attended St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Monessen, where she served as a member of Philophotos Ladies Society and Catering Auxiliary. She was also a lifelong member of Speers Civic Club.
Surviving are her daughters, Mary Ann Papantonakis of Charleroi and Irene (Steve) Douglas of Canonsburg. Stella was the proud grandmother or “Yia Yia” of three granddaughters, Kari (Dean) Heffernan, Lexie Papantonakis and Katrina Papantonakis; three grandsons, Sean, Chris and Matt Douglas; and two great-granddaughters, Adalyn Heffernan and Amelia Seaman-Papantonakis.
Also surviving are her extended family: two nephews, Gregory (Joyce) Ploussas and Peter (Susannne) Ploussas; three great-nieces, Kristin DeVall, Kimberly (Daniel) Bean and Nicole Ploussas; a great-nephew, Robert (Jessica) Ploussas; and her godson, John Brouzakis. Stella was loved dearly by her caregiver and close friend, Connie Mickulicz, for the past five years. Stella was blessed with a large circle of friends throughout her lifetime and leaves some to cherish her memory.
Deceased, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Cono J. Pezzino, and a sister, Despina (Thomas) Ploussas.
Stella will always be remembered for being a great baker and for her famous cookies, including everyone’s favorite – baklava.
Friends are welcome from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Rhome Funeral Home Inc., 1209 Grand Boulevard, Monessen. An additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Saturday, August 8, in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, Monessen, with Father George L. Livanos officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. A Trisagion service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
