Carl R. Rhodes Sr.
Carl R. Rhodes Sr., 79, of Beallsville, passed away Saturday, September 15, 2018, in his son’s home, of natural causes.
He was born July 24, 1939, in Denbo – Vesta 7, a son of the late Elmer “Dusty” and Genevieve McCoy Rhodes.
Mr. Rhodes was a 1959 graduate of California High School.
Carl was a U.S. Army veteran, earning the rank of sergeant. He was also a member of the U.S. Army All-Star Basketball Team.
Mr. Rhodes was an underground coal miner at Vesta No. 4 Mine and Consol Energy Mine in Eighty Four. He was also employed at Wetterau Food Distribution Center.
Carl was baptized at Garwood Baptist Church. He was a lover of all sports.
Mr. Rhodes was a good father and provider. He was a father to many, being a foster parent for many years.
On March 2, 1964, he married the love of his life, Mary E. Mowl Rhodes, who died October 29, 2005, and with whom he longed to be reunited.
Surviving are three daughters, Carol Jacoby of Monongahela and Melissa and Brandy Rhodes, both of Beallsville; three sons, Carl R. Rhodes Jr. (Ilene) of West Virginia and Camara and Bradley Rhodes, both of Beallsville; five grandchildren, Ilene, Dustin, Codie and Shelby Rhodes and Shannon Jacoby; four great-grandchildren, Mary, Kaylee and Braedyn Rhodes and Elijah Schindler; two brothers, Larry Rhodes of Rosco and Robert “Punky” Rhodes of Beallsville; and four sisters, Rosetta Barger of Waynesburg, Darlene Harn of Wisconsin, Myrn Griffin of Maryland and Lori Rhodes of Beallsville.
Deceased are three brothers, Elmer, Donald and Melvin Rhodes.
Daughter-in-law Ilene provided special care, as did caregiver Nancy Ernest, Davita Care of the Greater Charleston Area, Dee and Sue.
Friends will be received from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday in John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 21, with Pastor Nathan Miller officiating. Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill.
