Clyde D. Shaffer, 94, of Hickory, died Tuesday, January 29, 2019, in TownView Health and Rehabilitation Center, Canonsburg.
He was born March 28, 1924, in Houston, a son of David W. and Verdie Maude Stivason Shaffer.
Mr. Shaffer worked for Consolidated Coal Co. at the Westland Mine.
He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Shaffer was a member of the United Mine Workers of America in Westland.
He loved to work with and carve wood and took his carvings to the Hickory Apple Festival.
On February 9, 1946, he married Margaret E. Creasy, who died February 18, 2005.
Surviving are a son, Clyde Shaffer Jr. of Hickory; friends and caregivers Gerri and Michelle McClain of Cross Creek; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a daughter, Ruby Shaffer, who died at birth; four brothers, Blaine, Louis, Allen and Clarence Shaffer; and a sister, Gladys Liggett.
Friends will be received from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, February 1, in McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342. Services and interment are private.
