John Dows Evans
John “Jack” Dows Evans died Friday, March 22, 2019. He was born in Grafton, W.Va. on May 31, 1930, a son of Guy Wesley Evans and Margaret Dows Evans.
After graduating from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, he served in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He captained both the football team at The Taft School, and the wrestling team at Penn. He also played center for the Penn Quakers varsity football team in its diamond jubilee season. He married Margaret LaVaughn Bishop in 1952.
Jack began his career with General Electric. He retired as vice president of Human Resources for Eaton Corporation. Jack was active in several charitable organizations, including the Salvation Army in Naples, Fla., and United Way and Youth Opportunities Unlimited in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a past president of the Chagrin Falls, Ohio School Board. He was past chairman of the Meridia Health System and Vocational Guidance System Board of Directors. He also served on the Boards of The Labor Policy Association, The Cleveland Health Action Council and the Work in Northeast Ohio Council (WINOC). He was an Elder of Moorings Presbyterian Church, and a lifetime member of Glen Ellyn, Ill. Masonic Lodge 950.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife, LaVaughn; two sons, John Wesley Evans and wife Sue of St. Charles, Ill., and David Bishop Evans and wife Deborah of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; sister Mary Lou Evans of Toronto, Canada; five grandchildren, Lindsey, Laura and Megan (daughters of John and Sue Evans), and John Dows Evans II and Shelby (son and daughter of David and Deborah Evans); and three great-grandchildren, Van, Eisley and Craig.
