Norman Bernard Smith

Norman Bernard Smith, 92, a lifelong resident of Burgettstown, passed away peacefully with his family by his side Monday evening, April 29, 2019, in Donnell House, Washington.
He was born April 22, 1927, a son of the late Andrew and Clara Allison Smith.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served on the USS Houston during World War II and was honorably discharged. He was a recipient of the Pacific and American Theater ribbons and the WWII Victory Medal.
In 2013, he was the recipient of Burgettstown Community Library’s Good Egg Award for his countless hours and hard work volunteering for the beautification of the community. He was an active member of the Burgettstown Senior Citizens Association, where he served as president for many years.
Mr. Smith was a lover of music, especially Big Band, having played the trumpet for many years in a band and enjoyed dancing with his friend, Mary.
He is survived by his two daughters, Denise J. “Dee” Melnyk (the late Richard) of Burgettstown and Michelle Lynn “Missy” Santek (Marty) of Eldersville; two grandsons, Martin Samuel Santek (fiancée Abbie Hoard) and Michael J. Santek (Amanda); a great-granddaughter, Lily Mae Santek; and his faithful companion, Benji.
For 58 years, he was married to Elsie Taucher Smith, who also survives.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a sister, Evelyn Miller.
To honor Mr. Smith’s wishes, there will be no public visitation. A memorial service and inurnment with full military honors accorded by Slovan Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 17, in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, 1158 Morgan Road, Bridgeville, PA 15017, followed by a luncheon and time of fellowship at the Slovan V.F.W. Everyone is kindly asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:15 a.m.
