Oliver S. Stockdale
Oliver S. “Ollie” Stockdale, 87, of Waynesburg, passed away Friday, May 17, 2019, in Paramount Senior Living – Bethel Park, with his family by his side.
Born August 15, 1931, in Waynesburg, he was a son of the late Hillard and Sarah Hoge Stockdale.
Oliver was a Greene County resident for his whole life. He graduated from West Greene High School in 1949. Oliver was a former member of the First Christian Church in Waynesburg.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a tech sergeant, receiving a Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars.
Oliver was also a former member of a local country band. He was a member of the Liar’s Table at Hardee’s in Waynesburg.
Oliver married Carolyn Dixie Phillips Stockdale on October 27, 1956, and they were happily married for 63 years.
He was an employee at Alltel for 30 years as a supervisor, until he retired in 1991.
Oliver enjoyed music, playing the guitar and other instruments, singing, gardening, which his family said he had a green thumb and could make anything grow, coin collecting and going to flea markets. He liked the company of everyone who crossed his path and he never met a stranger. Oliver loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Greg (Nancy) Stockdale of Newark Valley, NY, Erin (Brad) Patterson of Waynesburg and Beth Sadlek of McKees Rock; seven grandchildren, Kari Stockdale, Jennifer Stockdale, Emily Fraas, Lauren Patterson, Ian Patterson, Nate Sadlek and Olivia Sadlek; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alberta Main of Waynesburg.
Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the time of service, Tuesday, May 21, in Kesterson-Rush Funeral Home LLC, 3275 West Roy Furman Highway, Rogersville, PA 15359, 724-499-5181, with Pastor Larry Douglas officiating. A graveside service will follow in Rosemont Cemetery, Center Township, with full military honors conducted by the U.S. Army, Waynesburg American Legion Post 330 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4793.
