Robert James Boardley Jr.
Robert James “Jim” Boardley Jr., 78, formerly of Washington, died Wednesday, October 2, 2019, in his Little River, S.C., home, following an extended illness.
Mr. Boardley was born November 8, 1940, in Gibsonia, a son of the late Robert J. Sr and Kathryn Baumgardner Boardley.
He grew up in the Canton Township section of Washington, and attended Wylie Avenue Elementary School, where he gained the nickname “Soupbeans Boardley.” Mr. Boardley was a very proud 1959 graduate of Trinity High School, where he participated in several sports. He was a hard worker his whole life, with employment over the years primarily in the trucking industry, including Lightning Express Trucking and Sysco Foods, and in later years as a greeter for Sam’s Club and Walmart.
On July 31, 1962, he married Marlene Strawn of Washington, his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Wendy Smith of Little River and Kathy (Jeff) Jensen of Washington; son Edward J. (Debra) Boardley of Longs, S.C.; six grandchildren, Ashley Higgins, Courtney Shrimpton, Dean Tzobanakis, Matthew Jensen, James Boardley and Anthony Tzobanakis; and four great-grandchildren, Livia, Kendall, Christopher and Emma Grace. He is also survived by his four sisters, Janice (Timothy) Maloy, Sandy (Frank) Bombara, Terry (Michael) Wheatley and Barb (Blair) Guthrie, all of Washington, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Boardley has joined his loving parents, Robert J. Sr. and Kathryn Boardley, his brother Eddie and his son Bryan in God’s eternal kingdom.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 9, with Pastor Linda Mankey officiating. Entombment will follow in Washington Cemetery Mausoleum.

His hospice nurse, Lori, the Hospice Team from Medical Services of America and Mr. Bruce Culpeper offered invaluable support during his final hours. They were a special blessing at a very difficult time.
