Thomas W. Hummell

Thomas W. “Sandy” Hummell, 75, of Canton Township, passed away on the morning of Friday, October 4, 2019, in Donnell House, Washington.

He was born November 21, 1943, in St. Petersburg, Fla., a son of Robert E. Hummell Sr. and Mary Roberta “Bertie” Cobern Hummell.

He was a 1961 graduate of Washington High School. He attended Grove City College and then the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, where he was an honors graduate in 1964.

He has been a licensed funeral director since 1965, first working with his father at the former Robert E. Hummell Funeral Home, now known as the Hummell and Jones Funeral Home. He was also a deputy coroner in Washington County during this same period.

Mr. Hummell was a lifelong Methodist. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Washington, where he was active in the choir. He formerly attended the West Washington United Methodist Church for 47 years.

He was a member of the Presidents of Harmony Barbershop Chorus of Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America International, the Washington Festival Chorale, Sunset Lodge 623 Free and Accepted Masons and several related Masonic bodies, as well as the Elks Lodge 776 of Washington and the Building Committee of the First United Methodist Church of Washington.

He earlier served the City of Washington as a two-term member of the Board of Health and had been a member of several Washington City advisory boards and study groups.

His hobbies included music, traveling and supporting family sports and activities and Washington High School sports.

On August 21, 1965, he married Mary Ellen Ward, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Craig Hummell (wife Tracy Aloia Hummell); a daughter, Amy Lynn Hummell Leute (husband Gerry Leute) of Rochester, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Logan Hummell, Alex Leute and Nicole Leute; a sister, Carol R. Balaz (husband Richard Balaz); and his nephews, Jeffrey and Andrew Balaz.

A half brother, Robert E. Hummell Jr., is deceased, with nephew Robbie Hummell and niece Vicky Rifgon surviving.

Friends will be received from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday in Hummell and Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. Services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Tuesday, October 8, in First United Methodist Church, Beau Street, Washington. A private burial ceremony will be held in Washington Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested for the building fund of the First United Methodist Church and the Citizen’s Library of Washington.
