Robert M. Smith, 98, of Hickory, passed away Monday, August 26, 2019.

He was born February 8, 1921 in Mt. Pleasant Township, a son of Vance M. and Jane Morgan Smith.

Mr. Smith was a 1939 graduate of Hickory High School.

Bob was a proud veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Army and receiving the American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with Bronze Star, Purple Heart and World War II Victory Medal.

Mr. Smith was an esteemed banker, having worked at the First National Bank of Houston, the Houston Branch of Western Pennsylvania National Bank and Equibank. Retiring from Equibank as Assistant Manager of the South Hills Branch.

Bob was a member of the Hickory United Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Hickory Lyons Club where he had served as treasurer, the American Legion Post #902 in Houston where he was past Commander and member of the Honor Guard, and was active with the Mt. Pleasant Township Community Center in Hickory.

He enjoyed coin collecting, reading about history and World War II and caring for his property. Mowing was his past time and therapy.

On September 25, 1953, he married Peggy Dunlap, who died July 3, 2018.

Surviving are a daughter, Suzanne D. Smith of Wilmington, Del.; a son, Randall M. Smith (Robin) of Richardson, Texas; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Smith of Wilsonville, Ore., and Andrew Smith of Dallas, Texas; two sisters, Dorothy Walker of Hickory and Roberta “Bertie” Farrar of Columbia, Tenn.; a brother, Richard L. Smith of Hickory; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are two sisters, Olive Ferrell and Elsie Smith; three brothers, J. Arthur Smith, Vance M. Smith Jr. and Paul Smith.

A private memorial service with military honors provided by the VFW Post 191 Honor Guard will be held at a later date.

The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Mt. Pleasant Township Community Center, 20 Wabash Street, Hickory, PA 15340.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342.
