John A. “Red” Liston, 96, of Scenery Hill, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019.
He was born July 15, 1923 in Buffalo Village, PA a son of the late John Allen and Belle Clark Liston.
Mr. Liston was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a Sargent in the Pacific Theatre during WWII and had been employed by the Jessop Steel Corp. for over 41 years before retiring in 1983.
John was no stranger to hard work and sacrifice, in the 1930’s he lied about his age to join the Civilian Conservation Corps. so he could send money home to his widowed mother. He was based in Arizona and made $30 a month and would send $22 home. He was a great believer of self-sufficiency and had many self-taught skills. He was a brilliant man hidden in modesty.
He loved spending time with his family and friends and enjoyed many trips out west big game hunting. He also enjoyed dogs, and birds and was partial to desserts, Crown Royal and Yuengling.
He was an avid sportsman and also love the outdoors, a lifetime member of the Washington Sportsman’s Club and won many awards for trap shooting, including the coveted American Grand National Champion at the Senior Level.
Surviving are a son Michael R. Liston (Brenda) of Blythewood, S.C. also step children Joyce Crumrine, Clark Crumrine (Becke), Robert Crumrine, Scott Crumrine, John Crumrine (Susan) and Linda Flint (Joseph). Also surviving are three grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Deceased in addition to his parents are his first wife Mary Reese Liston and second wife Jane Crumrine Liston who died in 2018.
