Donna D. Vavrek

Donna Dell Dugan Vavrek, 90, of Carmichaels, formerly of Nemacolin, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2020, in her home. She was born on November 24, 1929, in Nemacolin, a daughter of the late John and Mary Orell Taylor Dugan. On July 14, 1948, she married Frank A. Vavrek, who died September 8, 1984.

Donna had been a member of Saint Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a member of the Cumberland American Legion Post 400 Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491 Ladies Auxiliary. She was a homemaker and an excellent cook who enjoyed playing cards, crocheting and bird watching. Family meant everything to her and she took great pride in her family. She was a determined and spirited lady who served Nemacolin for 20 years as a Democrat committeewoman and 24 years as judge of elections. She was highly regarded for her 44 years of service to the community.

Donna is survived by two sons, William Vavrek of Nemacolin and James Vavrek (Janine Mansell) of Carmichaels; a daughter, Mary Lou Loar (Jerry) of Manassas, Va.; a sister, Carol Dugan Bowser (Herman) of Rices Landing; a sister-in-law, Betty Dugan of Melbourne, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, Stacey Vavrek Brodak (Joe), James Vavrek (Heather), William Vavrek (Traci), Heath Vavrek, Charles Vavrek, Karla Vavrek, Kyle Vavrek, Nicholas Vavrek, Traci Seto (Dan), Brian Swartz (Sherry) and Michael Swartz (Nicole); 26 great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to Frank, her husband of 36 years, she was preceded in death by a son, Frank R. Vavrek; a grandson, Michael John Vavrek; and three brothers, James O. Dugan, George “Bob” Dugan and Harry Dugan.

While observing social distancing and wearing face masks, family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 28, in the Yoskovich Funeral Home (724-966-5500), Martin J. Yoskovich, funeral director, 300 South Vine Street (Route 88), Carmichaels, where the funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, June 29. Mr. Zane Mitchell will officiate. Interment will follow at Laurel Point Cemetery, Carmichaels.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Blueprints – Meals on Wheels, 58 East Greene Street, Waynesburg, PA 15370, or to the Humane Society of Greene County, 183 Jefferson Road, Waynesburg, PA 15370.
