Martha Elaine Blayney Stewart Kencec, better known as “Sis”, 90, died April 11, 2021, a resident of Premier Health Center in Washington.
She was born April 23, 1930, in Washington, a daughter of the late Wilbert Burns Blayney and Martha Belle Clutter Blayney. One of seven children, the only girl earned her the nickname “Sis”, which is how friends and family referred to her the remainder of her days.
Sis attended Washington High School; thereafter, she enjoyed attending many class reunions catching up with friends and classmates.
She worked in grocery stores, restaurants and was a homemaker. She also helped operate the Slovene National Benefit Society (SNPJ) in Southview for a period of time.
On August 9, 1947, she married James Miller Stewart, who preceded her in death in 1955.
On October 16, 1971, she married Steve Kencec, who preceded her in death in 1992.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Sis was preceded in death by her brothers, Harry Blayney, William Blayney and Ray Blayney.
Sis was a young widow and managed to raise her children on her own. She was an animal lover. She loved to read. She loved music and dancing – particularly square dancing in her younger years. She enjoyed creating various types of crafts, ceramics, tole painting and basket weaving. She was the hostess of family holidays and summertime picnics. She made excellent homemade spaghetti sauce. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and eventually her great-grandchildren, too. Sis was a caretaker by nature; she kept and cared for her father in his golden years; also, her husband, Steve, who was afflicted with and succumbed to lung cancer; and later in life, Sis moved in with and cared for her Aunt Dorothy in her final years.
Sis is survived by her children, Linda D. Stewart and William K. (Brenda Joyce) Stewart; grandchildren Tiffany (Jeffrey) Prem, Megan (John Borelli) Lyons and Erin Stewart; and her great-grandchildren, Sara (Jordan) Burkett, Noah Hathaway, Rielly Steuernagel and Liam Lyons; her brothers, Wilbert (Bonita) Blayney, Lester (Allene) Blayney and Donald Blayney. Additionally, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Sis’s family would like to thank all the staff members of Washington County Health Center/Premier Health Center for the care they provided to Sis, and all the other residents, over the years.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no services.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Coleman-Taylor Funeral Services, 3378 Millers Run Road, Cecil, PA 15321.
