Edward R. Zelenka Jr.
Edward R. “Showtime” “Horse” Zelenka Jr., 66, of Washington, passed away peacefully, after a short illness, in the Washington Hospital Tuesday, April 13, 2021. Born June 7, 1954, he was a son of the late Edward R. Zelenka Sr. and Edith Mae Powers Zelenka.
He was a loving brother to Rebecca (Dave) Cecchine of Washington, Stephen Zelenka of Washington and Debbie Winfield of Ebinsburg; cherished uncle to John Burnette. Also survived by many nieces and nephews; and McKenzie Skidmore, who he considered like a granddaughter; and Sandy Cox, who was his loving caregiver and dear friend.
Edward graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1972 and graduated from Marietta College in 1976, where he attended on a baseball scholarship. After college, he managed three movie theaters in Washington before moving to Belmar, N.J., where he lived for many years and retired from the Asbury Park Press. After returning to Washington, he worked for his brother-in-law, Gene Hurt as a groomer at the Meadows Racetrack. He also owned many race horses, his favorite being Shambles “the smallest of them all.” In his later years, he worked at Hawthorne Woods helping with the elderly.
There will be no viewing and services and burial will be held at a later date.
